At 23 years old, Pat joined the war effort as Lance Corporal with the 8 Divisional Ammunition Sub Park in 1940. By July 1942 Pat was reported missing. He was 6 feet 2 inches, with brown eyes and hair, with a medium complexion.
Pat was taken as a prisoner of war, from Singapore in February 1942. He remained there for "fifteen months" before being interned at "Fukuoka Camp", Japan. He would spend the rest of his time at Fukuoka 17 before being rescued in mid to late 1945.
Pat was fed minimum amounts of sub standard food, beaten, psychologically tormented, made to toil in the local coal mine whilist also being regularly beaten there. On at least one occasion the prisoners were made to stand in deep snow for around two hours, which caused the death of two fellow Dutch prisoners. It would have been a relief to have the torture end and finally go home to his wife and child.
Pat later testified against his former oppressers when they were tried for war crimes.
