Death of former 'Rat Of Tobruk'

Chic Wright, who was one of the Rats of Tobruk, died in Port Lincoln Hospital on January 6 after a long illness. Chic was born in 1915 on Kangaroo Island and was named Orville after an early aviator whose surname was also Wright. The family lived at Cygnet River for a time and then moved to Allandale near Kapunda where Chic finished his education at Kapunda High School. Early in World War 2, he joined the 2/10th Battalion and sailed in November, 1940 in the Stratheden from Outer Harbour for the Middle East. Chic was in the Intelligence Section and, when in action, spent much of his time listening to the enemy radio in an effort to determine their strategy so that it could be countered. He was one of the Rats of Tobruk and survived the encirclement of Tobruk by the German forces. In 1943, he married Mildred Bates of Kingscote, Kangaroo Island. He returned to service in New Guinea and there contracted malaria. After discharge, he worked at building homes for the Soldier Settlement Scheme on Kangaroo Island. Chic was able to turn his hand to many things and to do them well. He became involved in carrying and later moved to Cowell where he bought his own mixed carrying business. He built the business by hard work and determination, becoming well known in the district as a reliable carrier and business man. He and his wife retired to Port Lincoln five years ago. In Cowell, Chic was a keen follower of the football club, president of the RSL and a member of the R.A.O.B. Lodge. A funeral service was conducted at Port Lincoln Uniting Church by Rev. LL. Gaskill and Rev. L R. Lohmeyer. Mr. Richard Munday performed the service for the R.S.L. at the Happy Valley Garden of Remembrance. Mr. Wright is survived by his wife Mil.
