Lilla Filmer LASHMAR
A very brave woman!
She was an Anglican missionary at Sangara (“west of Popondetta’ or ‘east of Kokoda’) who was captured by the Japanese with three mates. They had been offered safe passage out by the Australian Government but refused to leave the mission. Lilla was beheaded by the Japanese on the beach at Buna. There is a memorial window at St Cuthberts, Prospect and there is something at St. Columba’s at Penneshaw.
Commonwealth War Graves Commission site have her age as 35 but she had just turned 47 having been born on 10 August 1895 at Antechamber Bay. There is some difference in the date of her execution but 14 August 1942 seems the most likely.
