Logbook of 407220 Flying Officer Michael S Butler, who trained and served with 12, 23 and 75 Squadrons RAAF, during the Second World War. After completing his training with No 1 Flying Training School, Butler was posted with 12 Squadron in Darwin, to complete a Wirraway conversion course. In March 1942, he was transferred to 75 Squadron and went to New Guinea where he ws involved in the aerial defence of Port Moresby, including the battle of Milne Bay, 26 August-5 September 1942. Butler notes several entries during this period where he engaged with Japanese zeroes, including a hit on 21 April 1942. Kittyhawk A29-29 P-40E 41-5612 3/42 served with 75 Sqn and 76 Sqn; on 24/3/42 received by 76 Sqn from 2 EFTS Archerfield; on 30/3/42 was one of 5 P-40s picked up by 75 Sqn pilots then ferried to Port Moresby NG and was coded 'I' with them; on 17/4/42 flown by F/L Les Jackson when he single handedly attacked a formation of 5 Bettys and 7 Zekes, he claimed 1 Zeke in this aircraft; on 24/4/42 it was shot down over Port Moresby NG with pilot F/Sgt Michael Seymour 'Mick' Butler (407220) being ok; on 13/7/42 it was written off.
