Soldier’s Farewell Social.

Two farewell socials were held in the District Hall last week, the second one being tendered to Pte. George Oliver, who has been in camp in N.S.W. for several weeks. The gathering was not as large as the first one but the kindly feeling toward our guest was quite as warm.

The proceedings opened with the National Anthem and “ Song of Australia.” Music for the dances was supplied by Mesdames A. Harry, F . Harford, Miss M. Carter and Mr C. Zeitgeist. Songs were rendered by Mr C. W . Burgess, and a dust by Messrs C W . and R. Burgess, and Mr R Burmese amused the gathering with his imitations of local identities. The ladies provided a tasty supper. Just before supper was partaken of the Chairman of the District Council, Mr R. Wheaton, on behalf of the District extended their best wishes to Pte. Oliver. The Chairman's remarks were supported by Cr. M. Smith. Mr A. E. J. Bennet as a member of the Returned Soldiers League made the presentation to the guest, and no spoke of the brotherly feeling which existed among the R.S.L. members, and he felt sure the same brotherly feeling would be characterised in the 2nd A.I.F . Pte. Oliver briefly responded. The proceedings closed at midnight with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.”
