東京大学理学部生物学科卒、同大学院理学系研究科生物科学専攻修了、博士(理学)。国立遺伝学研究所とYale大学Frank Ruddle研で博士研究員、国立遺伝学研究所助教を経て、国立研究開発法人理化学研究所 生命機能科学研究センター(BDR)高速ゲノム変異マウス作製支援研究チーム・チームリーダー(非常勤/招聘、~2023.9.30)、名古屋大学大学院生命農学研究科 動物科学専攻 動物遺伝育種学研究室 教授。

 脊椎生物(のゲノム)が突然変異だけでより複雑な方向に進化可能なしくみについて興味を持ち研究を進めている。分子生物学、分子進化学、発生生物学、発生工学、遺伝学、ゲノム情報学などを基盤として、ゲノム編集をはじめとする発生工学技術を開発しつつ、脊椎動物の発生制御システムの進化について研究を行っている。発生調節遺伝子の遺伝子重複進化をモデル系として、ゲノムの98%を占める非コード領域に潜む膨大な制御情報がどのように進化することでボディプラン進化など新奇機能獲得に結びつくのか、またそれがどうして淘汰されず進化しうるのかを解明し、さらにその進化原理を応用して生物表現型の操作を可能にすることが研究目標。

≪ゲノム進化プロジェクト≫
ヒトに至る動物の進化の道筋では高度な生命機能が突然変異の蓄積によって実現されてきました。なぜ生物のゲノムは突然変異によって有害変異を蓄積しすぎて絶滅したりせず、進化し続けることが可能なのでしょうか?
偶然の産物である突然変異をどのように取り入れ進化するしくみがあるのか、ゲノムの進化原理の理解と応用を目指しゲノム機能発現機能の解析を行い、一方で研究ツールとしてのゲノム編集・トランスジェネシスなどの最先端マウス発生工学技術開発を進めています。さらに、こうした技術を応用して生物に新しい機能をデザインしようとしています。
