September 2016
Thank You PTO!
It was an evening of family fun at our Ka’a’awa 2016 Open House this past month. The entire Ka’a’awa Ohana was treated with a gourmet dinner prepared by our dedicated PTO members - Karla Cepeda- President, Vanessa Hollinger- Treasurer, Sheila Rich- Secretary, and Jeanie Vansteenkiste - volunteer. After enjoying a delicious meal parents and guardians got a chance to chat with the teachers and explore our facilities. Thank you PTO for all your hard work at open house - we really appreciate it!

Big Brother
Big Sister
Ka’a’awa Elementary school will be participating in the Big Brother / Big Sister program again this school year. This is a great opportunity for our students to participate in fun activities such as: Makahiki, Photography/Hiking, Pole Fishing, Ocean Voyage, and many more. These activities are designed to help student learn about teamwork and community awareness.
Staying Healthy
The theme for September's Nutrition and Physical Activity messages is Sodium. Take the Secrets of Sodium Quiz.
You are hiding in processed foods such as canned meats (e.g. Spam, Vienna sausage), canned vegetables & soups, cold cuts, cheese, breads, and instant ramen/saimin.
To make matters worse, on average, children ages 2-19 eat more than 3,100 mg of you (sodium) per day which is more than double the recommended amount by the American Heart Association. I should only be getting 1,500 mg of you (sodium) a day for ideal heart health.
If I have too much of you that can lead to high blood pressure which is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Let’s work toward a balanced relationship for me and my friends and family.
Sincerely,
Your SweetHear
Breaking Up is Hard To Do
I love you salt, but you’re breaking my heart
(from the American Heart Association)
Dear Salt:
You’ve been a part of my life since the beginning. I call you Salt and people also know you as Sodium Chloride. You play a critical role in my diet and help me maintain the correct balance of fluids in my body, but now I know I can’t have so much of you. I’ve learned people are consuming more of you (sodium) in their diets.
Recycling
Our first big fundraiser is the Recycling Drive at Ka’a’awa Elementary School on Saturday, Sept. 24 from 9:00am - Noon. Please come and support by donating items listed on the flyer below, or by volunteering.
