Volunteers Needed For Aina In Schools

Ka’a’awa Elementary School is in desperate need of volunteers for their Aina IS program. The Kokua Foundation was started by musician/surfer Jack Johnson and his wife, Kim, in order to teach sustainability and agriculture to students around our state.

The Aina Is program is a component of the foundation that works in partnership with the Department of Education on providing lessons directly to school classrooms. While this program has greatly enriched our students and has been such an inspiration for our school, we solely rely on volunteers to make this program possible. AINA in Schools is a farm to school initiative that connects children to their local land, waters, and food to grow a healthier Hawaii.

Responsibilities could include any of the following. (Volunteer can choose one or more)

  • Assisting the head volunteer with teaching the Aina Is lessons in the classroom.
  • Attend lesson trainings quarterly to learn about curriculum.
  • Teach one grade level or more. This could be once per month for one hour or twice per month for 2 hours.
  • Coordinate an after school Garden Club.
  • Assist with Garden Parties and Harvest Parties

If you have ANY questions or anyone in the community would be interested in becoming a garden, nutrition, or compost docent, please contact Denise Prow (head volunteer) for more information at deniseprow@hotmail.com or 630-945-3838.
