Welcome Back Ocean Raiders!
We hope you had a great summer! Are you ready to be a leader? Great leaders lead with respect and with a vision that everyone can succeed. Practice the 7 habits daily and you will bring out the best in you and the best in everyone else.
A+ Reminder
Time to apply for our Ka`a`awa A+ program. The program cannot start until we have at least TWENTY applicants. Please stop by the office and pick up an application today. We look forward to another great A+ year with the students. Thank you.
Let's "Synergize"
Aloha Ka`a`awa parents and guardians. Welcome to another great school year. Last year was a great success because of your help in volunteering for special events or just to help out in the classrooms. Please take a moment to look over this Volunteer Online Form and sign up to help our students. Let's "synergize" and have 100% participation this year. Thank you in advance for your help!
Summer Enrichment Program
This year's Summer Enrichment Program provided our students with numerous opportunities to explore multimedia platforms, weaving, ukulele, and physical activities. The students also had the opportunity to work together and take on leadership rolls. It was a great success. Let's do it again next summer!

Preparing For Hurricane Season
OFFICE OF SCHOOL FACILITIES AND SUPPORT SERVICES
SAFETY, SECURITY & EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS BRANCH
The 2017 Hurricane Season is under way and we along with the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency (HI-EMA) want to remind you to take steps to prepare for the possibility of a hurricane or tropical cyclone.
As noted in the May 24, 2017 Department memo, all state employees are considered “emergency workers” and shall perform functions as determined by the Superintendent during emergencies or disasters (HRS 0127A 8). Please be sure to review and update emergency contact lists and ensure that the emergency sentinel is working properly.
The memo also highlights the information flow for storm shelter procedures.
HI-EMA also recommends that individuals and families prepare an "emergency kit" for a minimum of 14 days of food, water and other supplies. You may also download the "Ready Hawaii" app to aid in your emergency planning and note the activated shelter listing.
For other tips, please visit dod.hawaii.gov/hiema.
Remember, Hurricane Season is June 1-Nov. 30. Be safe everyone.
Aina In Schools
Now is the time to sign up to join an ‘ĀINA In Schools Docent Team to lead or assist nutrition, garden, or compost lessons, or support a school by attending a fall ‘Garden Party’ work day. ʻĀINA docents lead monthly hands-on, standards-based garden lessons for grades K, 1, 4, and 5, compost lessons for grade 3, and nutrition lessons for grades 2 and 6 at our ʻĀINA partner schools. No experience is necessary, training is provided! Join us in educating the next generation about how to make healthy food choices, compost their waste, and grow their own food at schools all over Oʻahu.
Take a look at what our dedicated volunteers are saying about their experiences:
“I loved learning more about gardening and nutrition and having the opportunity to share it with the kids!” Parent Garden Docent, Waiʻalae Public Charter School
“I think the most important lesson the children have walked away with is knowing that no matter where they live, they have the ability to grow their own food. I think that is real empowerment.” Parent Garden Docent, Kaʻohua (Lanikai) Public Charter School
