Panel Discussion

Territorial Disputes and Consequences of Culture and Politics: East Asia, the Island Debate and NCA

Hilton Chicago

Room: Williford B - 3rd Floor

One of the most contentious topics in East Asian politics today involves lingering territorial disputes, which include the Japan-China-Taiwan clash over the Senkaku Islands/Diaoyutai Islands/Tiaoyutai Islands and the Korea-Japan debate regarding the Liancourt Rocks/Takeshima/Dokdo. This panel highlights divergent communication advocacy efforts, by defining conflicts and identifying common themes. Specifically, scholars representing each of the disputed areas and different NCA East Asia regionally affiliated groups, reflect on their shared past while considering cultural and political communication issues surrounding the island disagreements.
