JUCA 2009 Business Meeting Minutes: Seventh Annual Business Meeting of Japan-U.S. Communication Association

Date & Time: 9:30 a.m. – 10:45 a.m., Saturday, November 14th, 2009

Place: Palmer House Hilton, Salon 3

Co-Chairs: Jiro Takai and Paul Westbrook

Attendance: 19 Members in attendance

Old Business

I: Dr. Takai called the meeting to order at 9:35 a.m.

II: Approval of the Chicago 2008 Minutes & Agenda

a. Both the 2009 minutes of Chicago business meeting and agenda for the 2009 business meeting were approved.

III: Activity Report

b. Construction of new website Our website was reconstructed and can currently be viewed at:

http://www.educa.nagoya-u.ac.jp/~jucahomepage/JUCA/index.html

c. Membership expansion and maintenance: We have seen a gradual increase in membership during this term.

d. Budget and fund raising: Fund raising has been conducted at each session, at the business meeting, and at the annual party. We have maintained a healthy budget, thanks to the generosity of JUCA members.

New Business

IV: Granting Top Student Paper Award and Top Faculty Award

a. The top student paper award recipient was: Casey Elizabeth Brienza, University of Cambridge (formally University of New York)

b. The top faculty award recipients were: Takuji Shimada (Tenri University, Japan) and Carl Thameling (University of Louisiana at Monroe, USA)

V: Election of New Officers:

c. President: Paul Westbrook, per JUCA constitution, was nominated and approved unanimously.

d. Vice President: Akira Miyahara was nominated and approved unanimously.

e. Treasurer: Chikako McLean was nominated and approved unanimously.

f. Secretary: James Muller was nominated and approved unanimously.

g. Web Page Director: Koji Fuse was nominated and approved unanimously.

h. Graduate Student Representative: Mr. Tatsuya Imai was nominated and approved unanimously.

i. Member-at-large: Takeshi Suzuki, Akiko Fukumoto, and Peter Lee were nominated and approved unanimously.

j. Wondering Scholar: Koji Fuse was nominated and approved unanimously.

VI: Report from All Academic

e. 17 paper submissions for 2009 JUCA sessions, and 11 were accepted: 64.71% acceptance rate (Note –11 submissions/9 accepted- 85% for 2008; 19/14- 74% for 2007; 50% for 2005 JUCA)

f. 2009 Panel Reviewers: (alphabetical order) Rose Campbell, Mariko Izumi, Masaki Matsunaga, Max Saito, Jiro Takai, and Tomoaki Unagami

VII: Budget Report:

g. Treasurer, Rose G. Campbell, reported on the JUCA treasure, and the report was approved.

VIII: Recognizing the Contributions of Todd T. Imahori for JUCA.

h. Moment of silence was observed for Todd Tadasu Imahori (1956-2009)

i. Top Student Paper Award will be named “Todd Imahori Top Graduate Student Paper Award.” Future JUCA Executive Committee will discuss making changes to the award when they deem it appropriate.

V: Plan for the 2010 NCA Convention: Building Bridges, 11/14-11/17, 2010: San Francisco, CA.

j. Deadline for the paper submission will be February 17th, 2010

Following suggestions were made, and Executive Committee members will take them into considerations for planning JUCA 2010 sessions:

k. Ways of increasing quality of each session by allowing more time for discussions.

l. Selection of very best quality papers.

V: Reviewers for 2010

m. The following Reviewers were nominated and approved unanimously:

V: Membership Promotion Suggestions

The following suggestions were made, and Executive Committee members will take them into considerations for promoting JUCA:

n. Increase of institutional membership

o. Promotion of Japanese Americans related events

Dr. Jiro Takai adjourned the meeting at 10:34 a.m.
