1.It was moved, seconded, and unanimously approved that: the JUCA constitution be revised to include two new members to the Executive Committee: 2 Member-at-Large positions. (This is pending approval at the 2004, NCA Conf. in Chicago, along with the approval by attending members concerning the description of duties of Member-at Large Executive Committee members in the proposed constitutional revisions).

2.It was moved, seconded, and unanimously approved that the present duties of "Secretary and Information Officer" be changed to "Secretary" and that the secretary duties not include web-page design and coordination. (It was generally agreed that the Web-Page Director be someone fluent in Japanese and who resides in Japan). (This is pending approval by attending members concerning the title as well as the description of duties of Web-Page Director in the proposed constitutional revisions).

3.It was moved, seconded, and unanimously approved that: a new Executive Committee position be created: A Web-Page Director. (This is pending approval at the 2004, NCA Conf. in Chicago, along with the approval by attending members concerning the description of duties of the Web-Page Director in the proposed constitutional revisions).

4.Kuniko Fuse was nominated for one of the Member-at-Large positions, unanimously approved. (Formal approval pending acceptance of these minutes at the NCA Conf., 2004, Chicago, IL), (One Member-at-Large position remains open for nominations before or at the 2004, NCA Conf. in Chicago--nominations before the conference must be made to JUCA President, Professor Ryo Kitade by email or formal letter and any before conference nominations must be on the Agenda for the 2004, NCA Chicago meeting).

(Note: My wife’s name is Kuniko Fuse. We don’t use “Nishikawa” in any official document for the purposes of immigration law that gives us a tough time if we use different names in other official documents.)

5.Professor Koji Fuse, Drake University, was nominated to be the new JUCA Secretary, unanimously approved.? (Formal approval pending the acceptance of these minutes at the NCA Conf., 2004, Chicago, IL).

(Tom, this language seems like I’ll be the secretary again in Chicago. In your previous e-mail, however, you said I should be a vice president. Which one is true? Or are you thinking that we’ll go over the constitution first, approvals of new people, and then a new election? It seems confusing.)

6.Professor Kenji Kitao was nominated for the Web-Page Director position, unanimously approved. (Formal approval pending acceptance of these minutes at the NCA Conf., 2004, Chicago, IL).

7.Discussion:? A lengthy discussion about program planning for the 2004 JUCA programming at NCA Chicago Conf. was conducted.? Many viewpoints were discussed as possibilities. It was agreed that we would attempt to have two competitive papers sessions and that a top student award for the best student paper be included in the JUCA Call for Submissions.? It was also decided that full papers were encouraged, but that 3 page extended abstracts also be included and that these papers must be completed before being formally accepted.

8.The JUCA party and get-together was decided to be held in President Ryo Kitade's hotel room over-looking the ocean at 6 p.m., Saturday, November 22.?Mrs. Kitade (Hiro) would help with the set-up.? Tom Bruneau (JUCA Vice President) and Kimi Akita (JUCA Student Representative) would do the shopping for drinks and foods.? President Kitade made a generous contribution of money for the party and other meeting attendees contributed 10 dollars each.? (The Fuses?Koji and Kuniko?made a $50 contribution.) It was a great party with sake, sushi, salmon, and other goodies.? Professor Stella Ting-Toomey and her mate were invited guests by Professor Kitade's efforts.

9.There was some romance at our meeting.? It was announced that Professor Koji Fuse and Professor Kuniko Nishikawa, who met at the JUCA formulation meeting at the NCA Conf. in New Orleans in 2002 had married.? The entire group applauded this first of hopefully many more JUCA relationships to occur?in years to come!

Respectfully Submitted,

Tom Bruneau, Acting Secretary.
