JUCA 2015 Business Meeting Minutes:

Thirteenth Annual Business Meeting of Japan-U.S. Communication Association

Date & Time: 5:00: p.m. – 5:37 p.m., Saturday, November 21st, 2015

Place: Rio All- Suite Hotel & Casino

Chair: Dr. Akira Miyahara, JUCA President, Seinan Gakuin University

Attendance: 22 Members in attendance

I. President Miyahara called the meeting to order at 5:10 p.m.

1. President Miyahara introduced the agenda for the meeting.

II. Old Business

1. Vice President, Rick Kenney read the Minutes of the 2014 Chicago business meeting which was prepared by Max Saito

2. The Minutes of the 2014 was approved during the business meeting.

III. New Business

1. Top Paper Awards 2014

- Top Student Paper:

Albert Rintrona, University of Iowa

Conference Co-Planner: Koji Fuse, University of North Texas

- Secretary, Max Saito stepped down as previously announced on June 1st 2015, and Emi Kanemoto took over the secretary position as of June 1st 2015.

- Co-Planner, Fuse moved to have Shoko Hayashi Barnes step down from the Member-at-Large position because of her personal reasons. The motion was seconded by Vice President, Rick Kenney. Vote was taken and the motion passed by voice vote.

- Co-Planner, Fuse nominated Rose Campbell as a new Member-at-Large. Fuse explained that the main duty of a member-at-large is to review six papers for JUCA, along with some help with conference planning. The motion was seconded by Vice President, Rick Kenney. Vote was taken and the motion passed by voice vote.

3. Report from 2015 Conference

- Number of submissions : 14(12)*papers & 2(1)panel

- Accepted: 12(12) papers & 0(0) panel

- Rejected: 2(1) papers & 2(1) panels

- Number of sessions: 3(4) JUCA sessions (3 paper sessions & 0 Business Meeting)

4. Budget Report

- Treasurer, Kikuko Omori, reported on the JUCA treasury, and the report was approved unanimously.

5. Plan for 2016 (Philadelphia, 11/10-13)

- Conference Theme: Communication Civic Callings

(a) We were encouraged to invite communication activists (Social Justice Activists) to NCA.

(b) JUCA can potentially propose to have activists so that JUCA could have additional sessions.

- Number of sessions: 3

(a) Business meeting will be held outside of these sessions.

(b) By holding the business meeting during the JUCA Social, JUCA will be able to secure three sessions for the paper/panel sessions.

(c) A lot more full-paper/extended-abstract submissions are needed. If we have more submissions, President Miyahara and Co-Planner Fuse will be able to start negotiating with the NCA second vice president to get one permanent slot back.
