Ray Martin

By James Carroll

I remember Ray Martin from the World war 2 era, He lived on the side of Coldwater Mountain up above where Bruce Haynes lived and I saw him when he would come to my dad's store to get kerosene and maybe a loaf of bread. On one of his trips to the store he observed two local boys bashing each other's teeth out. That is when he knew what he was going to do with that piece of land he owned between Hunter street and Rowan street.

He built an open air boxing ring and let anyone who wanted to use the ring for free. He had boys comming there to fight from miles around. Snag Aldredge, Jack Hicks, Jack Cates, Larry Cates.
