Visits

The society organises trips to visit places of interest, exhibitions and conferences. Members pay for shared transport and any entrance fees as appropriate - with the society obtaining group discounts wherever possible.

14th - 15th October 2016 - International Astronomy Show

The International Astronomy Show was inaugurated in 2013 and proved to be a great success - including a visit by HAS members. The next show will be held on Friday 14th and Saturday 16th October 2016.

The show has moved to Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire (CV8 2LZ) - the old site of the Royal Agricultural Show.

We will put more details of HAS plans to attend the show here.

Information about the show and talks can be found here:

26th November 2016 - Hanwell Community Observatory

The Hanwell Community Observatory is at Hanwell, North Oxfordshire. The site is in a rural setting at Hanwell Castle, the grounds covering about 20 acres and offers a good dark site. The observatory has had regular use of the 12.5 inch reflector McIver Paton telescope since 1992 and now is home to a set of permanently mounted telescopes including a 30 inch Newtonian reflector and a 30 inch f12 refractor. The instruments are designed to be used entirely in the open air with no observatory building. Their website is here.

We plan to visit the observatory on Saturday 26th November where we will receive a talk from the Community Astronomer in the afternoon and enjoy galleries and gardens at the castle. In the evening, weather permitting, we hope to use the observatory's telescopes to look at the night sky.

10th - 11th February 2017 - European Astrofest, Kensington

The society organises trips to visit places of interest, exhibitions and conferences. Members pay for shared transport and any entrance fees as appropriate - with the society obtaining group discounts wherever possible.

Fri-Sat, 10-11th Feb 2017

Astrofest 2017

European AstroFest is the world's premier space conference and exhibition, bringing together the professional and amateur communities. AstroFest 2017 will be the biggest and best yet.

Saturday 10th June 2017 - Herschel Museum, Bath

Where William Herschel discovered the planet Uranus.

We are planning a trip to Bath next June. Outline schedule will be for us to join the Herschel Society at their headquarters at 11am for a talk, followed by lunch at a suitable venue in Bath and a tour of the Herschel Museum of Astronomy in the afternoon.

Details TBC.

Monday 21st August 2017 - Total Solar Eclipse

Well, wouldn't it be great if HAS organised a trip for us all to go and see the total eclipse of the sun in 2017. Sadly, organising such a trip is beyond the powers even of your dedicated HAS committee members. However, some HAS members have already booked their flights to go and see it and there are a number of tour companies organising trips to see the eclipse - ask Google.

TBD - Gran Canaria

We would still like to go to Gran Canaria - maybe in 2018 ....
