What are Defensive Charms?

Defensive Charms are charms and spells that every witch and wizard needs to know in order to defend themselves against any sort of attack or threat that may be put upon them. Defensive spells are an important part of training in becoming an Auror. Learning how to defend yourself is very important if you are going to be going out there to catch Dark Wizards. Defensive spells take time to learn and master, it is not something you are merely born with or wake up one morning and are a master at it. You are first introduced to defensive magic at school in your charms classes and Defense Against the Dark Arts. Students are expected to graduate with a basic level and knowledge.They are prepared to defend themselves and their loved ones when the time comes with all their training they received while in school. Auror Training uses a more advanced approach to defensive spells than what an underage wizard is taught. It is important to learn the theory behind defensive magic before attempting to use it yourself. Any kind of wrong incantation or spell can lead to a dire consequence.

How to protect yourself against a Dark Wizard!

Being an auror is all about fighting off Dark Wizards and bringing them to justice., however, this takes a considerable amount of training and skill. Dark Wizards are considered highly dangerous and skilled in dark magic, and are very hard to catch and sometimes it takes months or even years until they are captured. Dark Wizards or Death Eaters as they are know for, is a Witch or Wizard who commits crimes of hate, mostly against the Muggle community and wiping out the Muggle-born. Death Eaters have been around some twenty years before Harry Potter, and torturing anyone who was a Muggle. This carried on until a Prophecy of Sybill Trelawney, marked that Harry Potter is the chosen one to fight off the Dark Lord. Now twenty or so years later after the defeat of the Dark Lord, we are starting to see more and more attacks and Wizards or Witches turning to the Dark Arts.

As an Auror, it is our job to protect the public against attacks and torture on the Muggle community, as police protect and serve the Muggle community, same goes for Aurors in our world. Dark Wizards use many ways to torture muggles such as dark objects (which we will get into later in the class), dark spells, potions and tactics that are highly secretive and well thought out. This makes it that much more harder for an auror to catch them.

Dark Wizards, not only pose a risk to the public, but also to the Aurors who try to defeat them. It is important that you know how to protect yourself. Aurors are trained in defensive charms, spells and build upon their strength. Aurors always begin by documenting the attacks, and keeping track of all the events of the attack to study their moves, motives and paths, so they can track them down. Aurors must be careful when seeking out Dark Wizards to not expose their own cover, and protect themselves against a counter attack. Aurors also need to be highly discrete, and have a good disguise, so they are not easily recognized.

As part of this lesson, I will be teaching you your first three charms used by aurors for defense. Remember that these spells require time and practice to master, so today we are only going to learn the incantation and what each spell is used for.

Defensive Charm:

Incantation: (de-FEN-sio)

This spell is used to defend the caster. This spell is most effective when cast right away after an opponent's spell has been cast. It protects the caster from the debilitating effects of the spell. It acts kind of like a cushion or bubble around the Auror to protect them.

Defensive Charge:

Automatic Response

This type of charge is known as an automatic response to a dangerous situation posed upon the Wizard. This occurs in all witches and wizards, and you may remember it happening to you countless times. This is when a charge of electricity runs through the body of a wizard, and he or she will automatically respond by defending themselves. This type of charge occurs often in children and wizards who are not yet trained in defensive magic. As Aurors, we use this to help us control our magic and respond automatically to an attack without any delay.

Expelliarmus:

Incantation: ( ex-pel-ee-AR-mus)

This spell, which most of you should be familiar with, is used to disarm a spell, and cause the opponent's wand to fly out of their hand. This spell is effective in most cases, and causes the opponent to lose their wand, however, it does not always work especially if you encounter more than one highly powerful dark wizard.
