What is an Auror?

I am certain that most of you have an idea and know what an Auror is from what we have learned from the Harry Potter series. An Auror is a highly trained wizard whose main job is to fight in the dark arts to track down dark wizards and bring them to justice. Aurors are also known as “Dark Wizard” catchers. Aurors are seen as one of the most highly educated wizards in the Ministry of Magic. The job of an Auror is often dangerous and difficult. Some wizards even find it glamorous.

In history, there are only a few known Aurors that fought in tracking down Lord Voldermort and his supporters. The most famous known Auror in modern times is Alastor Moody. Moody fought during the first and second wizarding wars, and he was a member of the Order of the Phoenix. Moody served with distinction during the first war, having lost an eye, a leg, and part of his nose. He gained an enormous reputation, and remained valuable during the battle of Lord Voldermort until his heroic death in The Battle of Whinging

How do you become an Auror?

To become an Auror, a student must do extremely well in school and fulfill the requirements by the Ministry of Magic to be accepted for their rigorous program. Applicants to the three-year training program must posses five N.E.W.T.'s is these courses: Potions, Transfiguration, Charms, Defense the Dark Arts and Herbology with marks no lower than “Exceeds Expectations” in any of the subjects. Applicants that meet the expectations will also be given a background check to check for any criminal records. They will not be selected if they have a criminal record. An applicant will also go through a series of aptitude tests to show how well they react under pressure. Once an applicant is accepted, the applicant will undergo an intense training program that lasts for three years.

Becoming an Auror is not an easy task at all, which is why a lot of Witches and Wizards do not pursue this career. The lack of witches and wizards not pursuing this career not based on the lack interest, but mainly due to the fact that it requires so much training and good academic credentials. Many candidates are not put up for the strenuous work and danger that comes with the job.

However, now the Ministry of Magic feels that introducing Auror training in a young Witch or Wizard, by providing a safe and educational knowledge and preparedness for this career, students will be more than ready to pursue this as their career. This course is one of the first in the countries offered at an HOL level to introduce and give students a taste of the real training program after graduation.
