Korean Air Lines flight 007 was intercepted and destroyed on September 1, 1983 by a Soviet interceptor after it veered off course and wandered into Soviet air space. In the ensuing period immediately after the shoot-down, the United States sent P-3 spy planes into the area to look for wreckage and survivors. The Soviets routinely harassed these flights, and they required protection from F-15s. The F-15s maintained CAP a discrete distance from the P-3, ready to react if the P-3 was seriously threatened. While the Soviets threatened the P-3s repeatedly, there was never an exchange of fire between the two sides.

This scenario is designed to see what might have happened if the Soviets had decided to shoot down one of the P-3s. In this scenario, a Nimrod AEW plays the part of the P-3, while two F-15s CAP nearby. Two of the (at this time) new MiG-31s are approaching at high speed and altitude to intercept, and the F-15s need to protect the P-3.
