Libyan-Egypt War July 22, 1977

As a result of the visit of Anwar Sadat, Egypt's president, to Israel, outraged Libyan citizens, with the support of Libyan leader Col Qaddafi, started a "march on Cairo". Egyptian border guards stopped this march when it reached the Egyptian border, leading to attacks on Egyptian border posts by the Libyan armed forces. Egypt retaliated with a series of air raids on Libyan forces. On the 22nd of July (the second day of the conflict), Egypt launched a raid against Libyan air base at Gamal Abdel Nasser. Libyan Mirage V fighters intercepted this raid, downing one MiG-21.

Libyan-Egypt War July 22-23, 1977

As a result of the visit of Anwar Sadat, Egypt's president, to Israel, outraged Libyan citizens, with the support of Libyan leader Col Qaddafi, started a "march on Cairo". Egyptian border guards stopped this march when it reached the Egyptian border, leading to attacks on Egyptian border posts by the Libyan armed forces. Egypt retaliated with a series of air raids on Libyan forces. On the 22nd and 23rd of July (the second and third days of the conflict), Libya launched several raids deep into Egypt. The EAF was ready, however, and over these two days, several Mirages and a MiG-23 was downed by Egyptian interceptors.

This scenario is probably representative of the encounters that happened during this period.

1979

After the Libya-Egyptian War of 1977, the Libyans and the Egyptians continued to skirmish. In this battle, two Libyan MiG-23s took on two Egyptian MiG-21s armed with AIM-9P Sidewinders. One of the MiG-23s was downed.

The MiG-21 cannot carry the Sidewinder in FC2. Instead, I have used the MiG-21N armed with AA-8 missiles as a substitute.

Border.btl

This scenario is adapted from "Flight Leader" designed by Gary C. Morgan and published by The Avalon Hill Game Company.

"Border Clash: North Africa, 1984. Egypt and Libya have almost gone to wr on a number of occasions and some of the 'incidents' have led to serious fightng (most notably in the clash around Salum in July, 1977). The F-16A (Egyptian variant), MiG-23B (actually a MiG-23E) and Mirage F-1 (actually an F-1E--Libyan variant) aircraft in this scenario are less capable than the standard types. The Mirage IIIC is actually a IIIE (identical in the game)."
