"21 MiGs destroyed"

In his book "Red Storm Rising", Tom Clancy describes the third attack on Keflavik, Iceland, the new home of a regiment of Soviet MiG-29s. The two initial attacks (one by a group of B-52s and the second by F-111) had damaged most of the runways of Keflavik and destroyed a couple of aircraft, but Keflavik and its MiG-29s were still operational. In an effort to destroy the entire regiment of MiG-29s, the US Air Force and US Navy launched a coordinated attack designed to lure the MiG-29s into a trap. In the end, 21 of the 26 MiGs present were destroyed in air-to-air combat.

In the encounter described in the book, the main jamming force is a group of B-52s. As FC2 does not model B-52s, I have used EF-111As as the jamming aircraft.

This is a massive scenario--you might want to allow the computer to control a significant proportion of your aircraft!

Scenario (Hypothetical): Opening Moves During the Red Storm

Background (Hypothetical): During the start of World War III, both sides will make attacks on early warning aircraft, in an attempt to blind the enemies eyes-in-the-sky. In this scenario, the US goes after the Warsaw Pact AWACS aircraft orbiting behind the front lines. I have modeled this scenario set up after the opening AWACS attack described in Tom Clancy's Red Storm Rising (with a few additions). Since the F-19 never came to pass, and the F-117 cannot carry air-to-air missiles in FC2, I have upgraded the United States forces to F-22s (the aircraft most similar to what the F-19 was thought to be) but limited each of them to 4 AIM-9Ms as armament. This should at least reproduce the flavor of this fictional encounter. Also try AWACSOVb.btl for another version of this scenario using F-117s. This scenario should be either played as a two-player game or as the human player flying for the USAF. he USAF.

"Blinders Attack"

In the novel "Red Storm Rising", Tom Clancy describes an attack on the RAF base in Stornoway, Scotland, by a group of Soviet Blinders carrying air-to-ground cruise missiles. From long range, the Soviet Air Force lured the defending fighter aircraft (a group to British Tornado Interceptors and US Navy Tomcats) into a trap which enabled the Blinders to launch missiles at the airfield before interception. The Tomcats were sent after the air-to-ground missiles and the Tornados continued after the escorting fighter force and the bombers. At the cost of four blinders and two MiGs, the Soviets shotdown one Tomcat and managed to damage the airield.

In this scenario, I have used Su-24s to represent Blinders, and MiG-15s armed with a laser pod and one bomb to represent air-to-ground cruise missiles. The MiG-15s should fly straight towards the airfield and attempt to bomb. The US Navy player needs to destroy as many cruise missiles and Blinders as possible. st of four blinders and two MiGs, the Soviets shotdown one Tomcat and managed to damage the airield.

The Soviet player needs to get as cruise missiles off the map to the east as possible and still preserve his Blinder force. Try also BlinderB.btl, which, I think, is a better version of this situation.

"The First Keflavik Attack"

In his novel "Red Storm Rising", Tom Clancy describes the Soviet invasion and capture of the NATO Airbase at Keflavik, Iceland, which the cuts the GIUK-SOSUS line, allowing the Soviet Navy to roam free in the North Atlantic. NATO is desperate to disable this airbase so that it can not be used to support Soviet Naval operations. Soon after the capture of this base, NATO takes a crack at disabling using a force of 18 US Air Force B-52s preceded by an EF-111 Raven Jammer and a Wild Weasel force of 4 F-4 Phantoms. They are intercepted by 8 Soviet Mig-29s on CAP. The US Air Froce managed to damage three of the five Keflavik runways while losing half of the bombers. Knocking this airfield completely out of action would require another strike (see Keflavi2.btl).

Since the B-52 is not modeled, I use Tu-16s jamming aircraft as a stand in. They are heading from east to west and will pass over the air base (target) on their way back towards friendly territory. The Tu-16s don't carry bombs, so they need to simply survive the flight across the airfield to the end of the map to the west, which will simulate bomb runs on the airfield by the B-52 force

Another strike was launched in another attempt to disable the remaining runways and knock out a power station. This time F-111s come in at low level.

"Final attack on Keflavik"

In the novel "Red Storm Rising", Tom Clancy describes the final attack on Keflavik airbase by the US Navy in the NATO/Soviet war. This time a group of Intruders equipped with ARMs attack the SAM sites surrounding the airbase, while Tomcats provide topcover. A second wave of Hornets then sweep in to destroy the rest of the SAM sites

"Distraction of the NATO AWACS over Germany"

In his novel "Red Storm Rising", Tom Clancy describes the attack on a pair of NATO AWACS orbiting over Germany. An attack by 2 regiments of Soviet MiG-23s (about 24 aircraft) results in the shutdown of the AWACS and the loss of control over the airspace along the German front. As a result, the Soviets gained air superiority over this segment of the front for the first time.

I have used the maximum number of fighters possible for the Soviet side. Although the book describes two regiments (about 48 aircraft), the maximum allowed is 40.

At the height of the war between the Soviet Union/Warsaw Pact and NATO depicted in Tom Clancy's Red Storm Rising, the Soviets launch a devious attack against the US NAvy carrier Nimitz and her battle group (including transports carrying US Marines, and a couple other carriers including the French Foch and the USS Saratoga). Several squadrons of Soviet Backfire bombers launch AS-6 Kingfisher missiles at the battle group. All of the Tomcat interceptors have been drawn away by an effective decoy and are not available to participate in the defense. Only a couple of the French F-8 Crusaders are on CAP duty. The Backfires are detected 130 miles from the group and they immediately begin to launch the AS-6 missiles at long range. The AS-6 is a supersonic air-to-surface cruise missile, and they come in at the battle at high speed. The SAM and close in defense systems of the US and French ships are left to deal with the strike. Several vessels are severely damaged or sunk. The F-8s manage to down a couple of the Backfire bombers.

In this version, we catch the action after the bombers and missiles have closed to within 60 miles or so of the battlegroup. As cruise missiles are not modeled in FC2, I have substituted MiG-19s armed with three 250 lb bombs and a laser pod each. I also substituted the backfire bombers with Su-24s.
