"The First Meeting Between the MiG-21 and the F-104

On December 12, 1971, a fight took place between two aircraft which had been long awaited by the flying world. In the middle '50s, two design teams with impeccable credentials designed lightweight air superiority aircraft with the emphasis on performance to the exclusion of all else. Ironically, these twins, the MiG-21 and the F-104 did not meet in the air for 15 years, despite the fact that aircraft of later design had made many contributions during those years. On this December day, Flight Lt's Soni and Saigal had just taken off on an airfield CAP when they spotted 2 F-104s of the Pakistani Air Force, low on the deck, making a run at their airfield. The Indian pilots made a hurried intercept and the fight took place--at times only inches above the ground. Flight Lt Soni finally managed to get one of the two Starfighters with his GSH23mm Rotary cannon to conclude the first ever encounter of these aircraft."
