Introduction

Avalon Hill's Flight Commander 2 was published in 1994. Designed by Charles Moylan, this rather ancient Windows 3.1 game of tactical aerial warfare is still widely regarded as one of the (if not the) finest aerial combat wargames ever produced for the PC. Although designed and published in the mid '90s, the range of aircraft and weapons included in this turn-based simulation allow the modeling of aerial combat from the 50's to at least 2008. The 11 scenarios included in the original game touched on actual and hypothetical jet combat from the Korean War all the way to the Gulf War of 1991, but did not cover, by any stretch, the full diversity of aerial combat encounters during that period. Fortunately, one of the great features of FC2 is the Flight Commander 2 Mission Builder, which Avalon Hill released to allow players to build custom missions. While some FC2 players have created new scenarios for this classic game over the years, many areas of the past 58 years of jet combat have not been simulated in FC2. This page is dedicated to presenting new scenarios I have built over the past several years. They cover both historical and hypothetical situations derived from a variety of sources, including web pages, books, magazines, board games and TV shows.

Scenarios

In this section you will find a variety of custom scenarios for Flight Commander 2. They are broken up into:

Historical--These are scenarios modeled on actual air-to-air encounters that have/could or might have happened. While most of these are real historical examples of air-to-air jet combat, some are actual encounters that were resolved without an actual exchange of fire that have been modeled as if they were actual live fire contests. Some of these combat examples utilize aircraft and systems that are not modeled in FC2. In these cases I have made substitutions that I feel work pretty well to preserve the flavor of the actual encounters. See FCMB for more information.

Hypothetical--These are scenarios that are not based on historical events but rather on fictional events that could have happened, possibly could happen in the future, or are modeled for other interesting reasons. Examples include hypothetical strikes on North Korea or Iran by the USA or the possible results of an encounter between 4 F-22 and 32 MiG-29s. Hypothetical scenarios include those based on events in movies (such as TopGun or Air Force One) or books (Tom Clancy's Red Storm Rising, for example).

TV--These are scenarios derived from the popular History Channel program "Dogfights". All of these encounters are historical (with the exception of the final episode of season 2 "Dogfights of the Future"), and they have been included under the appropriate headings in the Historical section.

Board Wargames--Several excellent board wargames have been published over the years....many in the 1980's. I have taken several of these games and converted their scenarios into FC2 format. Games used include Air Superiority, Air Strike and The Speed of Heat (GDW), Air War (SPI), MiG Killers (Zocchi Games) and Flight Leader (Avalon Hill). Most have these are also included in the appropriate historical or hypothetical sections

Organized by aircraft involved--Here I have cross-referenced each scenario by aircraft involved in the combat. The aircraft have been organized by country where the aircraft was designed and manufactured.
