Powers: Telepathy. The ability to read other people’s thoughts and memories as well as communicate her own into other’s minds. This ability has grown, like with most psychics, into others such as manipulation, alteration of one’s perceptions, illusions and so on. Though she by no means is considered to be anything more than an average level telepath, she is quite skill in what she does.
Power Limitations: She can't get a good read from someone trained to create
psychic blocks. This is something that she always struggled with, though eventually manages to find a way through them, it’s not always fast enough. Any mental tampering she does only last a few minutes and can only affect one person at a time.
Hobbies and Interests: She often enjoys hearing music, reading, and driving. She also at times writes short stories reminiscent of fairy tales and has expressed interest in writing children’s books.
Background:
There was a moment in time where Shane was just your typical little girl from a normal family. Though her father and brother had always been a bit on the extraordinary side. They were both mutants, but the young girl never really understood what the word stood for. She never had illusions of being a mutant or anything like that. It just didn’t really affect her. When she was 12, her powers manifested. This happened during a traumatic event, when she and her mother were trapped in a burning building down town. She was suddenly finding herself able to hear everyone in the building’s emotions. The thoughts invaded her head rather quickly and she lost her own identity as fast, screaming about pains from wounds that weren’t inflected till she almost got herself burnt. Her mother grabbed her and protected her from the flames.
She was admitted in a psych ward when she was 13, because the voices didn’t stop. The doctors diagnosed her with a new type of schizophrenia and had her drugged most of the day to keep her as calm as they could. This led to an almost vegetable existence. It wasn’t till 2 years later, a mutant doctor, upon taking interest in her case, realized that all this was just her powers manifested and solicited the aid of a fellow mutant, a psychic know as Ben Carmicle. Ben managed to put mental blocks on Shane’s mind. This led her to regain some of her normal communication skills, though she was still unstable and unable to block some of the thoughts around her. Ben theorized that because her powers awoke during a traumatic event they have been evolving much more rapidly than they should, and Shane’s physical body can’t catch up.
Deciding that it was best she was rehabilitated in an environment where they not only could handle her, but where others were like her enough for Shane to feel like she was safe. They suggested to her parents to consider the Grey Institute. Where they not only specialize in this, but it worse came to worse, they had the technology to block her powers. Her parents weren’t too happy with the latter suggestion, but they were willing to try anything.
Shane’s arrival at the school took some time to get used to. Because of her lack of socializing skills, she
often found herself asking too many question or ‘peaking’ into thoughts she shouldn’t been looking. However, she did keep the behavior private enough as to not cause problems with other students. Because of this, she didn’t grow very close to any of the students, even though a lot of them went out of their way to make her feel welcome. She did find control in the institute, regarding her powers, and she even found ways to make them useful. With the help of Student/Team member Dallas King, she was able to successfully project her thoughts to the entire Institute during an attack from Limbo, and warned everyone to get to the sublevels. After this little endeavor, she felt she proof to herself enough and started growing better friendship with other students. Particularly Daniel, who had showed her kindness from the start. One day, she got him to agree to let her mind walk him. Here she became privy to his every though, memory and emotion and instantly felt a need to spend further time with him something that developed in an almost crush. When he died, she took it badly, and often used her powers to see his memories as a way to keep him close. However, she didn’t allow this to revert her into her previous state, and she remained out going with the rest of the students, catching up during the summer, to be on the same class as some of the others were.Shane eventually focused her curiosity on human nature to boys, and would often find herself asking the more experienced girls about it. This led to a friendship with Dash that escalated into something physical pretty fast (To the point of Dash becoming her first.) However, Dash’s attitude of a flirt and a womanizer were too much for her to handle. She didn’t blame him one bit for it, but the two seemed lose the friendship for a while. She got closer to Raphael of all people, and was involved in two situations with him that required her abilities to be put two a test. One where she and Raphael found Daniel’s sister’s killer by chance and the two were instrumental into getting him convicted. The second one was Shane’s big first mission as an X-Man where it required her to rescue Raphael from Belasco’s possession. She eventually succeeded and has then started to home her powers accordingly. Now much more confident than before, she is determined to use her powers to help people. She and Dash had resumed being friends, while Shane herself stopped showing any interest in dating or sex. She also enjoying reestablishing a relationship with her brother Carlos, who has move to New York for a job.
The coming year Shane became more involved with the X-Men, as she had planned, and found herself involved amongst the psychics who were trying to locate a missing Wolverine. This of course meant more sessions with several experience psychics, who Shane kept close enough contact still. She was regrettably not in school grounds when the attack happened, visiting her bother in the city when it took place, and was devastated by the aftermath. She could understand the school closing after, but like some of the students, transferred to Emma Frost’s school to finish the rest of her education and training. More or less she stayed at the school for the purpose of direct learning from Emma and her Hellions.
She eventually did leave Massachusetts and traveled back to New York, where she got a waitressing gig and shared an apartment with her brother. She, like most of the students, wasn’t working as an official X-Men per se, but was always available to help on most missions. Shane led a normal life and found herself in a relationship with a local college student. Her world took a bit of a devastating turn when he was shot dead during a mugging.Though Shane appeared to recover well enough from this incident, she took it as a sign to return working for SHIELD Psy-ops and was often employed in missions involving the former X-Men, though she got to work with many other people, gaining not only experience but also getting a chance to explore the world for what it was. Her moral center certainly got a few readjustments when it came to some missions. Including a particular classified one where she was force to erase someone’s memory. This left her feeling a bit conflicted with how the world operated, so when the proposal to reopen the school and shaping new future X-Men minds came, she was more than eager to participate. She offered her assistance to Cesca who, uprising Shane a bit, had grown into the School’s councilor. Shane of course was ready to resume a position among the X-Men as well, though she was concern her SHIELD experiences would cloud her judgment into doing things in a not X-Men type of way.Personality: Despite her background, Shane is very much a social person, probably trying to make up for years of isolation. She’s also a bit forward when it comes to men, and gives the impression she likes to be in control of that. She is a person who doesn’t like confrontation, yet will not let an argument go till people hear her side, in a calm matter of course.
Special Notes (if any): Shane’s dead boyfriend was going to propose soon as they found a ring with his recovered items after the police investigation. She wears this on a necklace around her neck, and gets avoid-y when ask about it.
