Code-Name: Sage
Ethnicity: European
Postion: Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Sex: Female
Age: Don't ask.
Appearance:
Hair: Black
Eyes: Blue
Skin: Pale
Weight: 135 lbs
Height: 5'7
Other: Sage uses a pair of red cybernetic sun-glasses that allow her to access and interface with
computers and data networks. She is rarely seen without them.
Place Of Birth: Southeastern Europe, the Balkans
Powers: Sage's mutation grants her a computer mind - in addition to possessing a perfect memory, she can process data much faster than even the fastest of computers -- whatever she sees, she remembers. Sage has complete control of her body and mind much like a computer, she can access memories like files and control her body's functions completely such as breathing and heart rate at will. Sage uses a pair of red cybernetic sun-glasses that allow her to access and interface with computers and data networks. She is also immune to telepathic detection and can resist most mind control and see through telepathically created illusions.
There is often a misconception that Sage is able to control computers with her mind (cyberpathy). This is not the case. Sage must interact with computers in a normal fashion, or through her virtual-reality glasses. Though she has been referred to as a cyberpath at times, this refers to her mental processing abilities and not control of computers.
Power Limitations: Sage once possessed telepathy that enabled her to link with other minds; read and broadcast thoughts; fire mind-blasts; and similar psionic powers. However, these abilities are no longer in use - to make herself immune to mental attack, she turned all her telepathic power inward so these powers cannot be accessed. Her 'jump start' ability has also faded and Sage no longer has access to them, and though she can still sense mutant potential in others; however, she can only sense that potential with mutants within twenty feet of her.
Hobbies and Interests: Computers, obviously, online chatting, gaming and gambling - she loves playing
board games, such as chess, against the computer or other online users, even if she normally wins.
While she might not admit it, she gets amusement from hacking into different websites and home
computers and changing the HTML or planting strange pictures or sayings in different locations.
Background: Sage was recruited by Xavier at the same time as the original X-Men, but instead of adding
her to the team he trained Sage in secret to become a spy against the Hellfire club and Sebastian Shaw.
Sometime during Sage's time with the Hellfire Club, Sebastian Shaw and Emma Frost dare the man
known as Elias Bogan to wager in a game of poker. By the terms of the wager, if Shaw loses, Frost
would "belong" to Bogan, but if Bogan's agent loses, then his fortune would be turned over to Shaw.
Mostly due to Sage’s advice and analytical skills, Bogan loses the game and is forced to honor the
wager. Having never lost before, Bogan harbors a grudge against Sage.
Sage had been working with the Hellfire club for years when Bogan kidnapped her. Although it has been years since Sage had outwitted him, Bogan keeps Sage hostage and mentally dominates her. This possession permanently scars her below the eyes. Bogan offered Sage back to Shaw for everything he has but Shaw refused and cuts his ties with Sage. However, the X-Men become aware of Sage's predicament, and Storm is able to rescue her. Out of gratitude, Sage stays with the X-Men, primarily in a support capacity. Afraid of ever being possessed again by another telepath, she channels all her telepathic abilities inward to create impregnable psychic shields.
Sage eventually traveled to England to join forces with the newly reformed Excalibur. She helped them on various missions such as battling the Shadow King and returning to ancient Camelot to prevent it from being prematurely destroyed. It is here that she meets Calvin and the two are eventually married. Over the years she has stayed in contact with Jean Grey and the other X-Men, and helped Jean stage the first re-open of the school after Xavier's death. While it is more of a test run than anything else, when the school closed again Sage offered spots within Excalibur for the students whom had attended, Faith Jewel being among them.
When the school was opened again Sage returned to the X-Man mansion to help train the new X-Men with her husband Mimic. She worked there for four years. After a very public battle between the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and some X-Men at the Mall of America, the team came under scrutiny by the government, the media, and S.H.I.E.L.D. The area suffered thousands of dollars in damages and many civilians were injured in the attack. The Grey Institute was sued and David, Dallas and Aaron sent to prison on charges related to the incident. With the school on the brink of being closed down, SHIELD stepped in to take over. Several staff members including Mimic and Sage were fired, and new regulations were put into place as the Grey Institute became a government funded and controlled team.
Sage was being furious about being fired, only to be confronted by the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. shortly after, offering her a position among the ranks if she was able to pass all the requirements. Of course Sage took this as the challenge it was, and exhaled at all the tests. She eventually joined the ranks of S.H.I.E.L.D, working directly under Natasha Romanov. Three years later, when Romanov retired, Sage took her place as Director.
Sage supported David and Aisha in their idea to reopen the Grey Institute, wanting to see Xavier's dream continue to succeed. She offered funding to assist setting up the new location, wanting not only the X-Men but the actual school to be government sanctioned and funded. Once the school was opened, she assigned Agent Chevy Dupont to the school again to serve as their communication between the two organizations and to ensure the X-Men are following government regulations. She eventually moved in her husband, Calvin Rankin as well to keep a close eye on the X-Men.
Personality: Sage appears very cold and calculating, in social situations she tends to sit back and watch
people rather than being a part of the conversation. She prefers this because everything she sees, she
remembers, and can be recalled in an instant, with perfect clarity, and analyzed with greater speed and
accuracy than computers. She uses these "computer-like" abilities in order to analyze and catalogue all
interactions with others, so while often others may make the mistake that Sage's anti-social attitude
separates her from the group and its happenings, she is more than aware what is going on probably
more accurately than anyone else.
Special Notes: She is married to Calvin Rankin, aka Mimic.
