Shearon Harris Evacuation Plan

Shearon Harris Evacuation/Relocation Plan

STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES HIGHLIGHTS/CHECKLIST

These procedures provide guidance for protective actions to be taken during man-made hazards:

General Procedures (When evacuation notification is received from proper authorities)

Alert the school

The principal or designee will announce over the public address system the following: “Everyone should return to their homeroom (2nd period) classes immediately.” A bell will sound and the evacuation is now in progress.

All teachers (core, elective, and special teachers) will immediately dismiss their classes and stand in the halls to monitor the students’ movement.

The elective and other assigned teachers are to secure their classrooms and join their assigned team groups to provide assistance.

From this time on classrooms are considered to be “locked down.” Students are to be constantly monitored by the homeroom teacher and are not to be allowed to leave the classroom to go to the restroom (unless absolutely necessary), the office, or any other location. It must be remembered that we are responsible for the students and they could panic in this situation. They are going to need constant adult support and supervision.

Classroom teachers will prepare students for the evacuation:

1. Explain evacuation procedures

2. Have students put on nametags (if available)

3. Have students take any personal items with them

Classes will remain in their buildings until loading of buses occurs. Bus loading will occur in the bus loop area of the campus.

Evacuation will be by grade-level (see bus assignment plan): Grade 6, Grade 7, and Grade 8. The principal or designee will notify teams when to leave their building.

Students will be placed on the buses by classes. Their homeroom teacher and assisting staff member(s) will escort them to the buses. Teachers will accompany their students on the bus and monitor their behavior during the trip.

The custodians assigned to the building will report to his/her assigned area to check that ALL students are out of the building. Custodial staff or designees will secure all areas of the school building.

The principal or designee will check to see that everyone is on the proper bus prior to its leaving for the shelter (the relocation site).

An assistant principal and one clerical assistant will leave on the first bus and meet each bus as it arrives at the relocation site school. All students are to remain on the bus until the assistant principal gives instructions to get off and enter the shelter. The assistant principals and office assistants will assist the Red Cross or Wake County Department of Social Services (WCDSS) personnel with registration of the students at the relocation school.

Students will remain in a designated area unless/until given further instruction.

No student will be allowed to leave the relocation site unless he/she has been properly authorized to do so. The Red Cross and/or WCDSS are in charge of the shelter operation.

At the relocation site, students will be released only to a parent/guardian after the parent/guardian has signed the child out with the appropriate school authorities.

The principal or designee will leave the home site school on the last bus. Before leaving, he/she will see that the buildings have been completely evacuated, all doors and windows secured, and the security alarm set.
