Important Facts to Remember:
Be alert for the fire drill bell warning at all times.
The custodian shall check all exits each morning to be sure they are unlocked, not blocked, and available.
The teacher shall explain to their entire class the drill signal used by the school.
Follow the designated route next to each classroom door.
Staff should take red emergency bags out during all drills including fire. Staff should use red cards in the door window and exterior window if conditions are dangerous or there is a suspicious looking item.
Teachers are to lead their classes from the building to a safe distance outside.
Upon arrival outside the building, the teacher is to account for every student (take your attendance book).
The teacher is responsible for the conduct of the class.
Students are to move quietly so that all instructions can be heard.
There is no running, pushing, shoving, tripping, laughing, or talking.
All personnel not assigned to fire drill duties are to leave the building, too. This includes principal, teacher, office staff, cafeteria staff, and maintenance.
All classes remain outside the building until a visual/verbal all-clear signal is given to return to the building.
Additional Fire Drill Procedures
If you discover a fire in a building, call the office first, unless the fire is to such an extent that waiting any length of time would immediately endanger someone’s safety. Report to the office the location of the fire, smoke, etc. Office personnel will attempt to notify an administrator at once.
If you are not given directions about pulling the fire alarm, you may assume you are to pull it after you have called the office. We will attempt to tell you whether we will sound the alarm or if you should do that in your area.
Our practice will be to evacuate the entire school until we determine the extent of the problem and then move back “when the smoke clears.” Remember that we do not move back inside from any fire drills until staff members receive a visual or verbal signal to do so; bells will not be used as signals to return to the classrooms.
As a rule, we will not have fire drills during lunch or the change of class. However, if in doubt, evacuate.
Bomb Threat Evacuation
Standard fire drill procedures will be used in the event of a bomb threat evacuation-intercom notification or fire alarm signal will be used, identical evacuation routes, red emergency bags are taken and green or red cards displayed. School staff should scan the room to ensure that there are no suspicious items visible and then place either a green card (safe conditions) or a red card (suspicious conditions) in the door window and an exterior window upon leaving.
