Cambridge learner awards announced for June 2019

Many of our AICE students were awarded Cambridge Learner Awards for the June 2019 exam session. Inez Nieves earned a Top in the World award for two exams! This is a first for our program and is an amazing accomplishment. She earned Top in World for Global Perspectives and Research and for Literature in English. Shannon Lahey, a 2019 graduate and current student at the University of Florida, earned a Top in Country award for Literature in English. Michael Pyle, a 2019 graduate and currently at the Naval Academy, earned a Top in Country award for Spanish Literature. Garret Godfrey, a senior at FIHS, earned an award for Top in Country for Chemistry. These top awards are a rare accomplishment and these students should be commended for receiving them. Other Cambridge Learner Awards are given based on scores on the range of exams a student sits for during an exam session. The award levels are Scholar, Merit and Distinction. Forty-seven seniors and forty juniors were awarded Cambridge Learner Awards in these ranges. Our AICE students all need to be recognized for the hard work they put into their courses and for their success on the exams.

On November 20th, Inez Nieves was awarded a scholarship from the Federal Bar Association for her winning essay submission in their 2019 Essay Contest Awards Ceremony. Inez has been an active and successful member of Teen Court for many years. Inez earned an A* and a Cambridge Scholar Award for Highest in the World on her AICE English Literature exam in June of 2019. Putting her knowledge of the law together with her exemplary writing skills earned her a very deserved recognition from the Bar Association. Congratulations Inez!

EXAM SCHEDULE RELEASED FOR jUNE 2020

Please look under the forms and docs tab to find the final exam schedule for June 2020. Please see when your child's last exam will take place before making vacation plans. The Freshmen and Sophomores will be finished taking exams before school ends but the Juniors and Seniors will have to test after school ends depending on the courses they are taking.

National merit semifinalists named for 2019

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has recognized the following four Fleming Island High School seniors as semifinalists in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship competition: Kayla Herman and Alexandra Wolfe.

These students have distinguished themselves among 1.5 million students from more than 21,000 high schools. The PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, taken during the junior year, serves as the initial screen of program entrants. Among the 1.5 million entrants in the program, only 16,000 are recognized as finalists, and only 7,500 became Merit Scholarship winners. Representing less that 1 percent of each state's high school seniors, semifinalists are the highest-scoring program entrants in each state.

To become a finalist, a semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, must be endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, and must earn SAT scores that confirm the student's earlier performance on the qualifying test. The semifinalist and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, which includes the student's self-descriptive essay and information about the semifinalist's participation and leadership in school and community activities.

Three types of National Merit Scholarships will be offered in the spring of 2018. Every finalist will compete for one of 2,500 National Merit $2,500 scholarships that will be awarded on a state-representational basis. About 1,000 corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards will be provided by approximately 240 corporations and business organizations for finalists who meet their specified criteria, such as children of the grantor's employees or residents of communities where sponsor plants or offices are located.

In addition, about 200 colleges and universities are expected to finance some 4,100 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards for Finalists who will attend the sponsor institution. National Merit Scholarship winners of 2016 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July. These scholarship recipients will join more than 308,000 other distinguished young people who have earned the Merit Scholar title.

Open House will be held September 13th from 6pm to 8pm. This will be a chance for you to meet all of your child's teachers as you move from class to class through a mini version of your child's day. Hope to see you then!

AICE Testing facility progress

Construction began on the AICE Testing building at the end of the school year. The summer brought many changes as the building site was prepared and the building itself started to take shape.

Completion is slated for January 2019. We are very excited for our students to begin using the facility for exams in May of this year. The building is being constructed with all of the Cambridge testing requirements in mind so that our students have an optimal testing experience.
