The Jacksonville section of the American Chemistry Society includes 250 members residing in Baker, Clay, Duval, Flagler, Nassau, Putnam and St. Johns counties. With over 163,000 members the ACS is the world's largest scientific society and one of the world's leading sources of authoritative scientific information. A nonprofit organization, chartered by Congress, ACS is at the forefront of the evolving worldwide chemical enterprise and the premier professional home for chemists, chemical engineers and related professions around the globe.
Based on their impressive achievements, we are proud to announce the American Chemical Society Outstanding Teachers for this year! They are:
1st Place: James Stehr, Fletcher High School, Duval County Schools
2nd Place: Michael Rivera, Nease High School, St. Johns County Schools
3d Place: Debra Scott, Fleming Island High School, Clay County Schools
Congratulations to Mrs. Scott. She has taught Chemistry, both Pre-AICE and AICE, in our program from 2006 to the present day. Because of her dedication and hard work, Fleming Island High School is one of only a few AICE schools offering A Level AICE Chemistry and we are the top scoring school in the United States in AICE Chemistry at both the AS and A Levels. Most AICE schools have given up offering AICE Chemistry at any level because they have so few students pass the exam.
Other AICE schools contacted our United States representative for CIE, which is the governing body for Cambridge exams, and asked if she could arrange for Mrs. Scott to offer training to other AICE Chemistry teachers. Our representative gladly arranged that training and Mrs. Scott was able to help other schools and teachers. I am frequently contacted by other schools asking if they can contact Mrs. Scott for help and she is always available to them.
Our AICE alumni frequently contact Mrs. Scott as they continue into university studies to thank her for teaching them how to approach the study of Chemistry. She is one of their favorite teachers and they form a great relationship with her through the years spent in Pre-AICE and AICE Chemistry.
