The AICE Program at Fleming Island High School had great success on our June 2013 examinations. The students and teachers involved in these course examinations should be very proud. Parents who watch their children work hard and study for their AICE courses should know how much we appreciate their support and their dedication to this program.
AICE exams are given in a staged process. The first stage of the exam is at the Advanced Subsidiary (AS) level which covers one year of course study. The second stage of the exam is at the Advanced (A) level which covers the second year of course study. We tested all of our AICE sciences at the A level as well as A Level Thinking Skills.
Why get so excited about A levels? Top tier schools recognize the high academic level of achievement an A level exam represents and they value these greatly. A level grades earn a student credit in the first two courses of the corresponding college course of study where the AS level earns the student one credit in the corresponding course of study.
Very few A level exams are offered in United States. Not only are we one of the few schools offering these A level exams, we are the only school in the country offering them and PASSING them on a large scale! Most of our exams are offered at the AS level and we continue to outperform the majority of the AICE programs in the country on these exams as well. For those students who plan to go to college in Florida or to an out of state school which accepts AS credit we continue to provide many college credit hours earned through our AS exams.
We hear from many AICE students and parents each fall when students register for their college classes. They are truly amazed and appreciative when the college advisor calculates how many college credits that student has earned in high school. All of our AICE students will enter college as a sophomore. Most of them will need one or two courses to classify as a junior. Our former AICE students are making quite a name for themselves as they impress professors at various colleges. Students are being recruited into teacher assistant positions or offered research positions their first year on campus; professors are shocked to find out that they are in their first year of studies.
We had 67 seniors, 75 juniors and 77 sophomores take a total of 783 exams last June with a total of 698 exams passed. 136 of those passes were A levels. As of today we have 66 AICE seniors who have taken and passed enough exams to earn the AICE diploma before they even sit for the June 2014 exams!
Behind these amazing statistics are some pretty amazing people. Each of these students has committed to achieving the highest academic goals. They are hardworking, dedicated, intelligent, funny people who make their teachers, their parents, and me very proud of them on a daily basis. They each have a unique story of how they came to be a part of this program and why they value their education. I’m sure there have been many days when they questioned the choice they made to be in AICE and to work as hard as they have worked. Whatever their reason, we appreciate the choice they made and the opportunity they have given us to be a part of their education.
