Las Acacias

Is this a relationship movie, a road movie, or even a silent movie? Pablo Giorgelli has made a film that unfolds with few words but with two eloquent performances.

Ruben is a middle-aged truck driver who has the regular task of hauling timber from Paraguay to Buenos Aires. On this journey he has a passenger, a young woman called Jacinta, whom he is giving a lift as a favour for a friend. However, to Ruben's obvious dismay, Jacinta is bringing her five-month-old baby. This was not part of the deal.

The relationship between the two gradually changes. It feels like we are living with Ruben and Jacinta, sitting there with them, mostly in silence. And yet, something is going through Ruben's head. He is formulating an idea. We find out what the idea is at the very end; it is exhilarating and moving.
