Mid-August Lunch

A middle-aged man looks after his mother and three other elderly women in a flat in Rome. the film is about growing old gracefully, and disgracefully. Witty, charming and beautifully balanced.

During the Italian holiday in the middle of August, the cities become deserted. Middle-aged Gianni would love the chance to get away, but he has to look after his domineering old mother. His neighbour asks Gianni the day before the holiday to take in his old mother as well, promising that he’ll write off Gianni's debts. When the neighbour turns not only with his mother, but also with his aunt, Gianni starts to feel sick. He goes to see his doctor, but even he foists his own elderly mother on him. So Gianni starts planning a special lunch for four old ladies.

"It's a wonderfully patient, delicately observed film; warm, generous, never for a moment sentimental or patronising, never exploiting dottiness and eccentricity." Philip French The Guardian.
