This sharp funny black comedy is about those people for whom life is just high school with money.
The central character, Mavis Gary, is a successful but damaged writer of formulaic fiction for teenager, the "young adult" market. Recently divorced, she lives alone in a small apartment in Minneapolis, watching daytime television and writing less and less.
Mavis has made a career of imagining herself into the madeup world of high school drama, eavesdropping upon and plagiarising adolescent talk, and neurotically drawing on her reinvented memory of her own teenage years of prom-queen triumph. She tries to turn this fantasy into reality when she returns to her small town origins to try to rekindle the romance with her ex-boyfriend who is now married with kids.
Mavis's vocation as a writer is driving her ever so slightly bonkers.
