Of Time and the City/ Listen to Britain

On April 24, we will show a double bill of the new film Of Time and the City, directed by Terence Davies and the classic film Listen to Britain, directed by Humphrey Jennings, with which it has been compared.

Of Time and the City is a collage of footage about the Liverpool of today and yesterday accompanied by music from the classics and the Light Programme. "What a lovely film this is, and what a welcome comeback for one of Britian's greatest film-makers" ( The Guardian). The film has a "fierce passion which renders it both serious enough to argue with and rich enough to wallow in " (Ryan Gilbey). "Not since Humphrey Jennings has a British film-maker used all the tools of cinema with such assurance and skill to rescue our sense of natoinal identity from "Last Night of the Proms" " (Nick Roddick)

Listen to Britain is a blend of sound and image which creates an emotional portrait of Britain at war. Natural sounds, popular sngs and classical music, as well as snatches of "overheard" conversation, skillfully complement the film's visual element. A classic of wartime propaganda.
