Alexandra
An elderly grandmother (played by opera legend Galina Vishnevskaya, wife of Rostropovich) visits her grandson in an army camp in Chechnya. Against the background of a tragedy, the film explores macho militarism, gender and old age.
"The bond between grandmother and grandson in all its intensity and ambiguity gives the film a real poetic core" Tony Rayns.
"The engaging character of Alexandra herself is redoubtable, rebellious, inquisitive yet as vulnerable as a nation at war with itself" Time Out.
