Travel information

By air: The Barcelona-El Prat International Airport (code BCN) is about 15 km from Barcelona. There is a bus connection every 15 minutes with several stops within the metropolitan area and trains leave the airport for the city centre every 30 minutes. A taxi to the center of Barcelona costs around 20-30EUR depending on the time of the day you travel and how many bags you have. The airport at Girona-Costa brava is about 100 km away from Barcelona and is served by several low-cost airlines. There are shuttle services between these airports and the central bus station of Barcelona.

Travelling within Barcelona

The Barcelona public transit network is operated by two companies:

The same ticket is used for both kinds of service. Tickets can be bought in metro stations, some "La Caixa" bank machines, and many tobacco shops ("estancs"). For more information on tickets click here. The best option for most people is a multiple ride "T-10" (for one zone), which can be shared by various people at the same time.

The metro operates from 5:00 a.m. to midnight Sundays through Thursdays; from 5:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. on Fridays, and non-stop on Saturdays. Click here for interactive metro map.

These metro lines are complemented by a network of suburban railways operated by RENFE Cercanías on 4 cross-city routes, and the new tram lines running in the north and the south of the metropolitan area.

Taxi: Taxis are moderately priced and easy to find on the street. Taxis in Barcelona are easily recognizable by their colours (yellow and black). A green light on top of the taxi means it is available.

Useful information about Barcelona

Barcelona is not a dangerous city, but there are quite a lot of pickpockets and muggers active, especially downwtown, at tourist attractions and places like train or metro stations, or at the airport. It only takes a minimal effort to pay a bit of extra attention to where and how you are carrying your wallet, bag or backpack, and it spares you the ordeal of having your documents and money stolen, your camera or your notebook. Please keep an eye on those items while you're walking in the street or sitting in public places. You don't need to get obsessed with this, just a bit careful!

In case of emergency, you can call the central alarm number 112, which is free from any phone, or send an SMS to the number 679 43 62 00.
