McLellan
This interesting clan surname is of Medieval Scottish origin. It is the Anglicized form of the Gaelic patronymic Mac Gill Fhaolain. This name is recorded in the Genealogical Rolls of the year 1467 in Edinburgh, the translation being 'the son of the friend (or servant) of Fillan'. The personal name 'Fillan' is itself a derivative from the Old Irish 'Failan', now 'faol', and meaning 'The wolf'. This is probably an accurate description of the clan, as they were also associated with the famous (or infamous) 'Border Reviver’s' who ravaged the North of England for three hundred years. The McLellans were originally numerous in Galloway in the latter end of the fourteenth century and they gave their name to Balmaclellan, meaning McLellans town. The lands were originally granted by King James 111 of Scotland to John Maclellan in 1466, and it is not clear when they were 'lost'. Amongst the early recordings is that of Gylbert Mclolane, a juror on a Dumfries inquistion in 1367, whilst he is also recorded as Gilbert McGillolane, 'Captain of Glenconnan', Galloway, in the same year. (So much for medieval spelling). Peter McLellan in 1755 was one of the first to receive lands from the crown, following the defeat of Bonnie Price Charlie in 1745. Presumably, the clan, or at least some members, took the side of the British Government, as indeed did most of Scotland. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Patrick M'lolane, which was dated 1305, recorded as capturing Dumfries Castle from 'The Bruce', during the reign of The Interregnum Government of Scotland, 1296 - 1306. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
History Of the McLellans
Alexander Mclellan , the great-grandfather Of Sarah ( Sally ) McLellan and his brother, Malcolm came to America from Scotland in the later part of the 1700s which was the turn of the 18th century and settled in Marion County, South Carolina.
Alexander was married in Scotland to Mary Mckinnon and live there sometime after their marriage.
They had several children, but all died in infancy.
Aviator had a son they named John and he devoted himself to farming and stock raising, accumulating considerable wealth, he later died in America between the years 1838 and 1839.
John’s children who reach maturity were four sons, Daniel, Duncan, Archie K, and Colon, and one daughter Florah.
Daniel lived on the homestead of his father, never married and died in 1860.
Duncan lived on a farm next to his brother, and a part of his father’s homestead.
Duncan never married and died in 1872.
The plantation where Duncan lived was believed to be a cotton plantation and has been divided, and R.P. Harnett Sr. owned a part at that time.
Archie K. McLellan married Harriet Rogers, a daughter of Timothy Rogers December 4, 1833.
The wedding had more people. That they had ever seen assembled on such a occasion, the cavalcade been accompanied the groom was over one hundred.
Archie K and his wife. Settled on land next to his brothers Duncan and Daniel near his father’s homestead, and resided there for many years, and then moved to Fairmont North Carolina, he lived there till after the death of his brother Duncan and inheriting the homestead tract of his brother. He returned to South Carolina and lived until his death in 1887.
Archie K raised a large family, nine sons and five daughters.
The daughter’s names were, Sarah, Margaret, Mary Ann, Florah, in Maranza.
Margaret married Allen Seely and moved it Fairmont North Carolina.
Mary Ann married Archie Stewart and also moved to Fairmont North Carolina.
Florah , married and Dougald B. Carmichael, both lived on the old land they settled on and both died there.
Florah died in 1877 and her husband, Dougald died in 1857.
Sarah and Maranza never married and lived with her brother Archie K.Jr. in Fairmont, North Carolina.
Archie K son’s names were, Malcolm, Alexander, Timothy R, Daniel, John B., Archie K, Jr., F Tristram, Duncan, and Robert.
Malcolm moved to Pollard, Alabama, when he was widely used in later married Celia Jernigan, and Lived and died there.
Alexander was a brave and gallant soldier in North Carolina, Regiment. He married during the Civil War to Roxanna Gaddy, and they had no children.
Alexander was later captured by the Union soldiers and was placed in prison where he died.
Timothy R married Flora Amanda McCormick, daughter of James Hunt McCormick, and resided near the old homestead of his father until his death in 1897.
His widow, and eight children, four sons and four daughters survived him.
Daniel lived with his father until his father’s death, and then remained there until the homestead was broken up and sold for division, and then Daniel married
Sally Lettette, of North Carolina. In 1888, after Sally stared at in 1892 he moved to North Carolina.
John B. on attaining he is majority went to Benton, Alabama, where he remained the rest of his life, he was a man of splendid ability, and was elected to a high office of important trust, which he filled for many years.
John B. married Patty Blackshear, and they had three daughters.
Francis Tristram was auditor of Marion County, South Carolina to which he was elected in 1896 and in 1898.
Tristram married in 1899 to a Miss Harrison.
Duncan formerly lived in the county, but moved to Fairmont North Carolina later on.
Duncan was married to, Hannah Wingate and they had two children, John Robert McLellan and Sarah Elizabeth McClellan.
Hannah Wingate McLellan , passed away when Sarah was only two years old.
John Robert was adopted by his Uncle Tristram, and Sarah was raised by her Aunt Maranza .
Duncan later married Ms. Julia Willis.
John Robert became the assistant auditor of the county, he was a bright and intelligent youth.
Sarah McLellan married Irnie Caviness Webb, December 22, 1908 in Roberson County.
They had three children, two sons and one daughter, Lewis Duncan,
Archie Caviness, and Hattie Evelyn Webb.
