WALTER CLAYTON CANADY

Walter Clayton Canady, 79, of Wilmington, died peacefully on Monday, February 29, 2016. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Nola Canady Myers and his son, Clayton Lamar Canady. Walter is survived by his wife of 56 years, Eva Canady; one daughter, Evaengline Ames; six grandchildren and one great grandchild. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 3, 2016 at Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family would like to offer thanks to the staff of Continuum Home Care and Hospice and North Chase Nursing and Rehabilitation for the compassionate care shown to Walter. FLORENCE, SC - Benjamin Reed "Pappy" Canady, 80, of Florence, formerly of Wilmington, NC, died Monday, July 23, 2007, in a Florence hospital after an illness.


He was born in New Hanover Co., NC, a son of the late Clayton Franklin and Louella Elizabeth Bethea Canady. He grew up and lived in Wilmington, NC, most of his life.


He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Victoria Rose Canady; and a brother, Andrew Canady; and a great-grandson, Robert Daniel Austin Owens.


Surviving are his daughters, Sharon Byrd of Florence and Peggy Elizabeth Carrasco of San Antonio, TX, and their mother, Betty Rose Hatfield of Florence; sister, Frances Leggett of Ocean Isle Beach, NC; brother, Walter Clayton Canady of Wilmington, NC; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.


Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday in the Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home chapel. Burial will follow in Florence Memorial Gardens.




Frances C. Leggett

JANUARY 17, 1926 – AUGUST 27, 2014

Frances C. Leggett, 88, of Shallotte, NC, Departed this life on Wednesday August 27, 2014.

Frances was born on January 17, 1926, in Wilmington, NC, daughter of the late Clayton Franklin Canady and Louella Elizabeth Bethea Canady. She is preceded in death by her husband, Henry Leggett and two sons, Kenneth Sanders and Clayton Leggett.

Frances was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Shallotte,NC.

Frances is survived by her daughters; Martha Howard and husband, Cary, and Rose Ann Galloway and husband, Nolan; sons, Robert Leggett and wife, Ginger, Thomas Leggett, David Leggett and wife, Lisa and Gerald Leggett; brother, Walter Canady; grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 10:00am to 11:00am on Saturday, August 30, 2014 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 4669 Mintz Street, Shallotte, NC 28459. Funeral Service will be held at 11:00am officiated by the Elders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Interment will follow at Brunswick Memorial Gardens, 5229 Ocean Hwy W, Shallotte, NC 28459.

Andrew Lovel Canady

Andrew Lovel Canady, 63, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005. He was born in Brunswick County, N.C., a son of the late Clayton and Louella Bethea Canady. He had served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He was owner of Andy™s Prints in Effingham.

Survivors are his wife, Pearleen Green Canady of Effingham; three sons, Andy (Kassie) Canady of Timmonsville, Phil (Hilda) Coker of Effingham, and Jerry (Gloria Shirlaw) Coker of Florence; four daughters, Frances (Jon) Windham of Florence, Renee (Roger) Floyd of Effingham, Joyce (Ronnie) Weaver of Effingham and Cindy (Tommy) Turner of Winnabow, N.C.; two brothers, Walter Canady of Wilmington, N.C., and Benjamin Canady of Florence; a sister, Frances Legett of Shallotte, N.C.; 12 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Elwin Coker, a granddaughter, Elizabeth Windham, and a grandson, Jason Weaver.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Layton-Anderson Funeral Home. Entombment will be in the Mausoleum at Florence Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Layton-Anderson Funeral Home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Husband of Aunt Annie Canady Shepard


Thomas A. Shepard, Sr., former resident of Wilmington, died early Thursday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ralph June, in Ayden after a long illness.

Born in Wilmington on Feb. 11, 1883, he was the son of the late Thomas Alfred and Eugenia Dozier Shepard. Mr. Shepard for many years owned and operated the Southern Billiard Parlor here.

Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Ann McCullers of Jacksonville, Fla., Mrs. Marlo Abatelli of New York City, Mrs. Ben Blue of San Diego, Calif, and Mrs. Ralph June, with whom he made his home; three sons, Thomas A. Shepard, Jr. of Wilmington, William G. Shepard of Jacksonville, Fla., and Robert C. Shepard of Washington, DC; a brother, George Shepard of Chattahoochee, Fla., and a sister, Mrs. James Butler of Camilla, Ga.

Funeral services will be held at the Chapel of Andrews Mortuary Saturday at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Alexander Miller. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery.
