Surnames became necessary when governments introduce

personal taxation. In England this was known as a poll tax.

Throughout the centuries' surnames in all countries have continued to develop, often leading to astonishing variations of the original spelling.

In our family, the original spelling was Coville, the ‘le’ was dropped after the Civil War.

The grandparents of Lewis Alamance Covil came from France in 1843 and settled in Marine North Carolina, now known, as Jacksonville, North Carolina.

They were Francis E .Coville whose nickname was “Hutt” and his wife, Anne Elizabeth Tyndall Coville and their infant son William Francis Coville.

There is very little known about Francis E. Coville, he died shortly after coming to America, and moving to Marine North Carolina.
