This is a list of the one hundred and nineteen hills and mountains on the islands of Britain and Ireland that have a prominence of at least 600 metres.
There are twenty-five in Ireland, seven in Wales, four in England, one on the Isle of Man, and eighty-two in Scotland. Familiar mountains such as Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis are, of course, included. However, the list will take you far and wide, including to such far-flung islands as Harris & Lewis and South Uist in the Outer Hebrides, to climb An Cliseam and Beinn Mhor respectively. What makes the list unique is that it is the only hill-list solely with a prominence criterion that covers both Ireland and Britain. The hills in these two islands do form a geographical and geological unit worth exploring as a whole.
The list can be obtained in downloadable leaflet form from the bottom of this page. It also features on the Hill Bagging and Peakbagger websites - see here and here.
To date, only sixteen people are known who have completed the list. Simon Tull, the sixteenth person, took it on as a charity challenge in 2025, completing the list in a record 93 days, thus beating Liam Chase, the fifteenth completer, by a comfortable margin of 220 days! Simon is also the first known person to complete the list in six years.
Notes:
Following a hill survey which the list author attended in April 2018, Moel Siabod was deleted from the world list of Majors (P600m peaks), as it has a prominence of 599.9 metres. Further details can be found at http://mappingmountains.blogspot.com/search/label/Moel%20Siabod . In consequence, Moel Siabod has also been removed from the Major Mountains of Britain and Ireland, reducing the number from 120 to 119.
Following hill-surveys by Alan Dawson, and detailed examination of OS trig data by Alan and the editors of the Database of British Hills (see at http://www.hill-bagging.co.uk/search.php?qu=S&rf=1333,1334), Beinn Odhar Bheag (883.3m, P775m) has been found to be higher than Rois-bheinn by 0.9 metres. Beinn Odhar Bheag therefore becomes the P600m peak and '119er', replacing Rois-bheinn.
A register of completers up to 31st July 2025 is given at the bottom of this page.
