The 119

Major Mountains of Britain and Ireland

Ben Nevis 1344.5m-1344.5m, Scotland (photo Mark Trengove)

This is a list of the one hundred and nineteen hills and mountains on the islands of Britain and Ireland that have a prominence of at least 600 metres.

There are twenty-five in Ireland, seven in Wales, four in England, one on the Isle of Man, and eighty-two in Scotland. Familiar mountains such as Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis are, of course, included.  However, the list will take you far and wide, including to such far-flung islands as Harris and Lewis and South Uist in the Outer Hebrides, to climb An Cliseam and Beinn Mhor respectively.  What makes the list unique is that it is the only hill-list solely with a prominence criterion that covers both Ireland and Britain.  The hills in these two islands do form a geographical and geological unit worth exploring as a whole.

The list can be obtained in downloadable leaflet form from the bottom of this page.  It also features on the Hill Bagging website at http://www.hill-bagging.co.uk/P600m.php.

To date, only fifteen people are known who have completed the list.  The fifteenth person took it on as a charity challenge in 2019, completing within a year.  A considerable undertaking!

Notes:

A register of completers up to 31st December 2023 is given below.  Two people completed the list in 2019.  Richard Tibbetts finished in style on Ireland's highest - Corran Tuathail (Carrauntoohil) 1038.6m, P1038.6m in May, and Liam Chase in November on Pen y Fan  886m, P672m in South Wales.  Liam is the first known person to have completed The 119 in under a year from start to finish.
