Latvia
Latvia (Latvija in Latvian) is situated on the eastern shore of the Baltic Sea, and has a total area of about 64,500 square kilometres. It is bordered to the west by the Baltic Sea, to the north by Estonia, to the east by the Russian Federation, to the south-east by Belarus, and to the south by Lithuania. For further details, see the Wikipedia article at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latvia.
The country consists of the following main geographical areas:
The western part of the country is a low-lying coastal plain (the Ventas-Usma Lowlands).
To the east of the coastal plain is an area of low upland called the Kurzeme Upland (Kurzemes Augstiene in Latvian).
To the east of this area is the Riga Lowland, drained by the River Daugava. Beyond Riga (the capital city), to the north, the coastal plain continues to the Estonian border.
In the north-eastern part of the country is another upland area– the Vidzeme Upland (Vidzemes Augstiene in Latvian), where the highest hills in the country can be found.
In the far north-east corner, stretching over the Estonian border, is the Alūksne Upland (Alūksne Augstiene in Latvian) which is called the Haanja Upland in Estonia.
On the far eastern side of the country, on the eastern bank of the River Daugava, lies an upland area called the Latgale Upland (Latgales Augstiene in Latvian).
All the upland areas in the country are of morainic origin.
The highest and most prominent hill in Latvia is Gaiziņkalns, in the Vidzeme Upland. This has a height of 311.6 metres, and a prominence of c.187 metres.
There are three hills in the country that have at least 100 metres of prominence.
The three Latvian hills of 100m of prominence are also included in the downloadable leaflet 'Prominent Hills of The Baltic States', which can be downloaded from the Estonian page on this website.
A list of the hills of at least 100 metres of prominence is downloadable below.
