TENTH GENERATION

Appachan married ALEYKUTTY (ഏലിക്കുട്ടി) from Chenankary (ചേനങ്കരി). He married the only daughter of KAANJU-PARAMBIL (കാഞ്ഞൂപറംബിൽ), AKKARA-KALATHIL KUNCHERICHEN (അക്കരക്കളത്തിൽ കുഞ്ചറിച്ചൻ). They settled in Mavely (മാവേലി). They had nine children in the following order- SHOUVRIYAR-KUTTY, Fr.KUNCHERIA S.J. Sr.ASISSI S.D, ACKAAMMA, THOMMACHAN, MATHACHAN, ANTHONICHAN, THANKAMMA, and AMMINI.

In 1963 Appachan felt unwell and was taken to Trivandrum. There he had to undergo an operation from which he never recovered. In his seventy third year he received all the Catholic rites and died in the hospital in the presence of his priest son. The dead body was brought to Kannady (കണ്ണാടി) and buried in the Kavalam (കാവാലം) church cemetery. Appachan was synonymous with innocence and righteousness. All the people who knew him would vouch this naked fact.

Some stories I heard from my grandmother Aleykutty; Appachan had stood surety to the Thundiyil family for a sum of Rs 10,000/-. The Thundiyil family defaulted and the burden of the loan fell on Appachan. Even if all his assets were sold it would not have covered the loan. A Pravarthiyar (പ്രവർത്തിയാർ) (tax collector for the king) helped Appachan tide over by loaning him the tax amount collected by the pravarthiyar. Appachan used the money to pay the interest and paid back the Pravarthiyar in instalments. Then the Second World War happened. There was a shortage of cereals and the price of the paddy shot up. A good harvest and high prices helped Appachan pay off the surety amount. By the grace of God, Appachan was able to tide over the crisis. Once along with my father I had visited the Pravarthiyar’s son Kuttappan (കുട്ടപ്പൻ) in Changanacherry when he was ailing. Appachan’s sons were always grateful to the Pravarthiyar’s family.

Another story I was fortunate to hear in a heated argument between my uncles’ Thommachan and Mathachan. This story truly illustrates Appachan’s simplicity. Mathachan was telling that Appan (Appachan’s father-in-law) had cheated his father (Appachan). Appachan and his father in law jointly did paddy cultivation. The father in law was an inactive partner. Appachan met most of the expenses and did all the work. The father in law chipped in when Appachan was short of cash. And they shared the profits equally. I don’t rightly know how many years this unofficial partnership ran. But for the two consecutive years the paddy cultivation was a loss, the father in law did not chip in with his share of the loss. The argument was about this. Mathachan said that Appan (father in law) cheated Achayan (Appachan). Thommachan said that it was not Appan’s (father in law) fault, but Achayan’s stupidity. Why, he countered, did Achayan after being short changed in the first loss continue the partnership the next year also?

Another story retold by my grandmother was how she had gone to her father’s home to ask for some help (money). In Mavely it was hard times, the children were all studying (Kuncheriachan, Pennamma [Sr.Assissi], Thommachan…). Her father did not help. He said that he too had children studying and that he too was hard up for cash. She told me, the moral of the story is ‘God helps those who help others’. Because all her children did well in studies under trying circumstances while most of her brothers’ children did not even with favourable circumstances.

Appachan had grace and personality. Once Fr.Kuncheria took Appachan to visit the king of Travancore. Appachan in his old age never wore a shirt. He always wore a white dhoti and a white shawl draped over his shoulders. The king mistook Appachan for a Brahmin and seated him, while the great and influential Fr. Kuncheria remained standing. The king only realised his mistake when Fr. Kuncheria introduced Appachan as his father. But by then it was too late to rectify his mistake. (In those days nobody sat with the king unless asked by the king. And the king only seated the high caste Hindus with him).

Appachan was a charming and witty entertainer. Once while talking to Vellookunnel Devasiachan, I told him that Acchachan (my father) was a very good, humorous and glib talker. He said to me, your father is nothing compared to Appachan (my grandfather). He could it seems talk so well and was so witty and hilarious that spending time with Appachan was so much fun. With a bottle of toddy and a towel turban on his head, he would drink and sing and regale everyone around with humorous stories, no one noticed how time flew.

Appachan was also a great and considerate host. He was very considerate with every visitor whether rich or poor, it did not matter to him. He packed them fruits and necessities when they departed. There was always food on the table for them. He spend time with them. His relatives used to visit him regularly. Even Aleykutty’s (Appachan’s wife) relatives were happy to visit Mavely. They used to hail him Aliya (അളിയ) (brother in law) and spend so much time with him that it irked Aleykutty. She used to mumble, “They have a brother in law, and they forget that they have a sister who is catching all the smoke in the kitchen. Don’t they care about the sister”? Actually a big part of Appachan being a great host was Aleykutty’s cooking. She was one of the best cooks in the land. Her fish curries were very famous. She was a martinet in the kitchen. She ran a very tight ship. She kept all the servants on their toes. Appachan’s table was never empty. There was something for the guests whatever the time. Even the Pazhayakattu relatives used to visit and enjoy Appachan’s hospitality.

Fr.KUNCHERIA S.J (for more details see subpage)

Appachan's second son, KUNCHERIA (കുഞ്ചെറിയ) after he completed his education joined the Society of Jesus. He received his priesthood at Poona. He taught in several institutions run by the Jesuits, including Madras Loyola College, Bangalore St. Joseph's college, Alappuzha Leo XIII School, in Calicut and in Kannur over the years. He had exceptional skills in organizing and running institutions. He was very charismatic and attracted people towards him. All his life he had a huge following of friends from all walks of life and religion, always ready to help him.

When the Jesuits took over St. Joseph's School in Trivandrum it was in a dilapidated state in all senses. The School was run down and the students were uncouth and unruly. Fr. Kuncheria S.J took over as the headmaster of that School. In a short span of time he turned the school around and made it well disciplined and famous. It became one of the premier institutions in the city.

When the Jesuits founded the Loyola School in Trivandrum, Fr. Kuncheria was transferred from St. Joseph's School to this new school. He was made the Principal of Loyola English Medium School. He nurtured the school from its infancy to its heights. Through his untiring efforts he moulded this school to be the best English medium school in the State of Kerala.

He was a very dedicated teacher. In the KAUMADHI weekly printed from Trivandrum, dated 7th June 1965, on page 6, Mr. Balakrishnan wrote an article describing the personality and extolling the virtues and sincerity of Fr.Kuncheria as a teacher and reformer. Fr. Kuncheria enjoyed an elite position in the social circles of the Trivandrum city.

N. J. Antony (Mavelil Anthonichan) and Thankamma Antony (photo taken in 1989)

ELEVENTH GENERATION

My father has written nothing about himself in this Family History Book he kept, so I (Santhosh Antony) am taking it upon myself the responsibility of writing the resume of my father.

Appachan's youngest son N.J. ANTONY (ANTHONICHAN) (അന്തോനിച്ചൻ) was born in 1929. He was naughty and mischievous and very daring when he was young. By the time he passed out from the tenth standard he studied in eight schools. He was either transferred or dismissed from most schools because of his pranks and misdemeanours. It was only the respect and sway that his father had over the priests that enabled Anthonichan to complete his schooling. Whenever he got suspended or dismissed he used to come home as if nothing extraordinary had happened. When asked he used the excuse that it was either special holidays or study leave. After a few days when the postman brings the letter only the truth comes to light. His father exasperated used to cane him, but it was to no avail. Only his father's influence got him admitted to another school.

Once when he was leading a strike in the school to oust the British from India, they went from the Boys School in Pulincunnu to the Girls School to close it down. The nuns who ran the school were firm and the girls were reluctant to leave the classrooms. Anthonichan got on top of the desk and gave a memorable speech - The gist of the speech was thus, "If you girls don't leave the class and follow us to make this agitation a success, we boys won't marry you, girls. You will all remain, old maids till your hair turns grey and all your teeth fall off".

On one occasion when he was studying in St.Berchmans School in Changanacherry, Anthonichan's classroom was on the first floor and the floor was wooden planks. There was a hole in one of the planks in the row of benches in front of where Anthonichan sat. He poured water through the hole and it fell on the priest who was teaching in the class below. Anthonichan threatened to thrash the quiet boy who sat in the front row where the hole was, if the boy snitched. The priest came storming into the classroom, looked around at the seemingly innocent faces and came to a conclusion. He caned the small quiet guy in the front row, who did not snitch but took the punishment stoically. Years later this quiet boy became the Bishop (Powathil) of Changanacharry. And a great many years later when his Excellency and Anthonichan chanced to meet, they laughed over it.

This photo was taken in 1985.

On another occasion when he was studying for his graduation in St.Alberts College at Ernakulam, his cousin who was in Sacred Hearts, Thevara was called and asked to bring his guardian because of his low marks. Anthonichan used some makeup to look a bit older and went as Thankappan's uncle. The shrewd priest saw through their facade and caught hold of them. Anthonichan shook free of the priest's hold and ran away leaving Thankappan to face the music.

Anthonichan was infamous among the family members for pioneering two events. In those days members of aristocratic and elite Christian families never sported moustaches - they were all clean shaven. Anthonichan had the infamy to be the first among the Ettuparayil family to sport a moustache. He used to grow moustache when he was in the hostel and shave it off before he went home for holidays. This used to be his usual practice. One day his father Appachan arrived to visit him unannounced. Anthonichan was surprised by the visit and did not have time to shave the moustache off. Though Appachan saw the moustache he pretended not to notice and did not say anything. Thus emboldened Anthonichan came home the next time with the moustache intact. Using this as a pretext the younger cousins too clamoured with their parents saying that if Anthonichan chettan could sport a moustache why couldn't they too.

It was a taboo with in the Ettuparayil Family - No members ever smoked. Anthonichan was the first smoker in the family. He began smoking at a young age - when he was in school. In those days the toilets were not attached to the house. They were outside the house and mostly far from the house. This made it easy for Anthonichan. He used to smoke on the sly at home on the pretext of going to the toilet. One day his younger sisters' snitched on him. His father waited outside with the cane and his siblings waited with bated breath to see him get caned. When Anthonichan came out, his father caught hold of him by his lungi preparing to cane him asked, "Who told you to smoke". Pat came the innocent deadpan reply, "the teacher said that smoking is good for the health". The nonplussed Appachan burst out laughing and let go of Anthonichan. The siblings waiting to see him caned were disappointed.

Thommachan troubled by the decadent ways of Shouvriyaarkutty first wrote to Kuncheriachan, then to Maathachan and finally to Anthonichan saying that if things went on as such, the family would be ruined. It was a period of time when the head of the family was accorded great respect and held a powerful and authoritative position in a conventional hierarchy, who insists on being heard, respected and obeyed. Even the influential and respected Kuncheriachan was reluctant to broach the subject with his father. Maathachan also dreaded talking about it to his father. Anthonichan who was studying in Bombay at that time, when he came home for holidays spoke with his father about the matter. It was in 1952 and the property was partitioned. In the Christian families it is usually the custom that youngest son inherits the homestead. But because of his father's fury and displeasure, Anthonichan lost his birth right - he lost the homestead to Thommachan.

Anthonichan after completing his post-graduation [M.A] in Sociology became a class II officer in the Cochin Port Trust. After working there for a few years he resigned from his job and came back home and engaged in agriculture. He married THANKAMMA, the daughter of IYPE THOMAS (ഐപ്പ് തോമസ്സ്) of AMUM-THURITHIL (അമംതുരുത്തിൽ) family of Thodupuzha (തൊടുപുഴ). He build a house in the Mavely (മവേലി) property, south of the homestead and settled there with his family. He had four children, one son SANTHOSH (സന്തോഷ്), and three daughters, MINNI (മിന്നി, NURJI (നൂർജി), and SUNNU (സുന്നു).
