This is a history of the Mambalam->Neduvely->ETTUPARAYIL(എട്ടുപറയില്‍ )->Mavely families of Kannady, Pulincunnu as kept by my father, the late Mr. N.J.ANTONY, Mavelil of Kannady. He wrote in Malayalam and I have translated it to English trying to be as faithful to the Malayalam version to the best of my ability. We are lucky to have such a rich genealogy. This is our heritage and our legacy. I have in my hands a treasure trove of the unbroken history of our family for over four hundred years and thirteen generations on the trot, if I take into account the generation of my children. PREFACE

There are a variety of reasons for writing a family history of this nature. This is a huge and extensive family- with many branches and umpteen members; who are in various positions of power and influence. They are also in many states of wealth and manpower. They have spread out all over the world. With the passing of generations, the members become distant and finally strangers. They don't know each other or their relationships and finally there is no co-operation among them. Many families are ignorant of their roots and their ancestors. To a great extend this family history will be an answer to this problem.

When I was fifteen years old, that is about twenty three years back; my father, the late Mr. N.X. Joseph co-incidentally met Prof. Fr. P.P.Joseph in Kottayam. He was the history professor in C.M.S.College, Kottayam at that time. From their conversation I came to realize that Fr. P.P.Joseph who was a Jacobite was related to us through our ancestors, who too were Jacobites. Fr. P.P.Joseph showed my father the PULICKAM-PARAMBU family history reverentially kept by his family. From the PULICKAMPARAMBU family history he fondly showed my father the part where one of his ancestors brother had departed to KUTTANADU.

It is from this tome and a book of notes about our family history kept by the late ELAMBRA-KKOTTU CHERIACHEN and also from some documents that were there in MAMBALAM that are the basis of this family history. I have also added to this some of the stories that my father N.X.JOSEPH had regaled me with, that he had heard from his elders, of this family. Also there are recollections of old family history as retold by the late NADU-VILEI-KKALATHIL MAA-THU-LA-CHEN.

The notes jotted down by the late Cheriachen, Elambrakkottu, were in a dilapidated condition. Many pages were torn and in many places the ink had blotted and the writings were indistinct and unreadable. All these made me realize that a part of our history and heritage was being lost forever. So I decided however difficult the task might be, that I will rewrite the family history in an orderly manner and preserve it for the future generations.

In 1954 when I was studying in Kottayam, Prof. Fr. P.P.Joseph and I got reacquainted. When he came to know that I was the son of Ettuparayil Appachan (N.X.Joseph) he became delighted and insisted that I visit him home. Later onwards till I finished my studies in Kottayam, he took upon himself the responsibility of my unofficial guardian. He took great interest in my welfare. It was routine every Sunday, that he and his wife visit me in my hostel and take me to their home. Both of us have acknowledged openly that this special liking was also because of our distant blood relationship.

Whatever I have written in this book is the truth and nothing but the truth. I have not tainted this book with half truths and untruths. In this ancient and noble and aristocratic family except for a few branches most of the families are middle class or lower in financial status. I am happy to have been able to successfully arrange this family history in some sort of order.

Yours,

N.J.ANTONY, MAVELIL
