As a society, there will always be the expectation to demonstrate civic and global responsibility. I believe this message changes slightly when applied to the world of development. The development and construction world, like almost everything, is primarily driven by money. Often times it is easy to ignore the right thing and instead focus on what is profitable. Economic sustainability and civic enrichment should not fall by the way side in the pursuit of profit.
If I am honest with myself I never put much emphasis on anything other than the bottom line before enrolling in the MLPD program. I would do service projects on my own time but I never considered how the things I was building could affect the world around me. I was asked to participate in a project that focused on the environmental impact that a development can have on society. It brought to light the ways in which a project can enrich the community around it outside of just the potential monetary gains. The project made me consider what negative impact of past projects that I have been a part of developing, and what I could do to improve in the future. At my current stage in life I truthfully do not have much say in what decisions are made at the top level. I do not possess the funds to develop and build anything of great magnitude. Instead I will carry these values with me as I move up and in the development industry and do my best to implement them as soon as I am in a position to do so.
