a) Describe, with sketches, the following log conversion methods.
i) Through and through sawn.
ii) Quarter sawn.
b) State which method is best for wide table top boards (explain your choice of method).
a, i) Through and through - slab - or rift sawn. The timber log is passes through the saw where a plank is removed then the log passed through the saw again. This method of sawing is the cheapest, gets most timber out of the log and produces wide boards. but the boards tend to curl and cup when drying.
a, ii) Quarter sawing (illustrated) produces boards that are stable which rarely twist or warp and on some timbers like oak produce attractive medullary figure
b) To produce wide boards for table tops then quarter sawn boards will be more stable and will not twist. Some wrongly would recommend the wide boards produced by the through and through method, but these will tend to warp. If wide boards are needed then book matched quarter sawn boards can be jointed to make the wide boards which will stay flat.
