(a) Saws require setting so that the kerf produced (width of the saw cut) is wider than the thickness of the blade. Otherwise it will bind on the timber and overheat as a result of the friction. This will remove the tension in the saw and cause it to wobble (buckle)
(b) The wider the saw kerf the more waste materials there is while ripping planks. Narrower saw blades with a narrower kerf may facilitate getting an extra or additional piece out of a plank.
