(1) Prior to starting, ensure correct blade for operation, positive hook for ripping negative for cross cutting. Ensure correct setting up of guards (grown guard max 12mm above work piece). Riving knife correctly positioned. Fence correctly positioned (set to gullet of teeth for ripping and correct distance for material. Ensure rear table is clear for off cuts and work pieces. Ensure push stick is to hand before starting.

(2) Consider getting assistance for ‘taking off’. For long planks ensure round side to fence and hollow face down. Use push stick for last 300mm of cut. Use correct starting procedure.

(3) Ensure work area is clean and clear of saw dust and off-cuts (Slips, trips and falls). Use correct PPE (boots, ear defenders, gloves and or dust mask for certain timbers)

(4) Ensure operative has been trained in the operation of the machine, particularly what can go wrong so they are not taken by surprise.
