10 Week Empathy Cafe Series. One Empathy Cafe on Each XR Principle
Short URL: http://bit.ly/XR-Principle-1
XR Principle #1: We Have a Shared Vision of Change Creating a world that is fit for generations to come.
Our duty is to create a world fit for the next seven generations to live in. Our hearts tell us a different world is possible. Our vision of change is sufficiently broad that it can contain a variety of opinions on how best to work towards that change:
“A healthy, beautiful world, where individuality and creativity are supported, and where people work together, solving problems and finding meaning, with courage, power and love. This will be underpinned by cultures rooted in respect for nature, genuine freedoms and justice.”
In this 10 week Empathy Cafe series, we will use the Empathy Circle process to discuss and explore a different Extinction Rebellion Principle each Saturday. We will have an ongoing dialogue about the meaning and application of these principles. Bring your questions, comments, feelings, thoughts, needs and insights. You can share whatever is alive for you.
We will address such questions as:
* How do you live this principle?
* How does this principle support or challenge you?
* How might this principle have a tension with another principle?
* Etc.

This principle seems to be about a positive vision for the future and for me that means empathizing with the well-being of the future generations. What if we put ourselves in the shoes of 7 future generations? I wish this principle was more explicit about the importance of mutual empathy in creating a positive vision for the future.

For me, it is about a cultural paradigm shift. About creating and disseminating an alternative to the civilization we live in. I believe in building inside the movement a regenerative community that is based on empathy, valuing the time of life we have, and positive mutuality. And I believe in spreading it beyond the movement to the society - or in other words, incorporating society person after person, piece by piece to the movement. This movement is for me a social trend that we may pass on to the next generations.

We are facing three different directions in this crisis, and two will go bad.
First, we are vectoring in a direction of atomization and balkanization at smaller scales. Individuals and groups are losing faith in larger constructs that do not fit into the group. For example, Hungary. In group vs. out group.
Second, the opposite direction of the atomization vector is authoritarianism; individuals solidify into a single amorphous unit. These are mutually reinforcing vectors. When atomization arises, pressure builds for authoritarian structures to fight back against balkanization. Both are natural forks. This tends to be how our system operates.
Third, we can use this opportunity space to travel in an orthogonal direction. In this corona crisis, we have an opportunity window to actualize them rapidly in about 4 to 12 weeks, which could create a new space that is neither authoritarian nor balkanized. The chance of this happening is incredibly small. The embedded structures and neural pathways are habituated to take either the first or second paths.
The grooves of the extractive and narcissistic system are deep. The crisis will make the grooves shallower, until eventually nothing holds things in place. The table is becoming very flat, on both a personal or individual level. Your psychological inertia, the degree to which your past choices will determine your future choices will drop to zero. Commitments you have made in the past will open up new possibilities.
The XR vision for “A healthy, beautiful world, where individuality and creativity are supported…” will only emerge if we build the whole with others and drop the nonessentials.
One of the real challenges of the third way is that we have been holding onto way too much.
You need to find the people and drop the stuff that ain’t yours. You need to find people who are holding the other pieces. The other pieces will fall into place. You need to leap through case studies. You need to focus on the pragmatic, for example, helping old people and teenagers, supporting supply chains and logistics. This keeps morale up and keeps you really sharp. You have to be focused on the hard core problem. This really works.
Then it begins to work. Recognize what you cannot handle; route them out to somebody who is better resourced. Make sure that everything is coming through there is of high quality.
At the top subtle level, they have been talking about this for a long time. They cannot deal with this on their own, the mystics and artists. Pull out nuggets of absolute wisdom from them. Distill the essence of their message. Melt out that which is not real. Pull that out in a constellation that is attempting to assemble itself.

→ Reflecting lately on the identity of the movement and what the role of Extinction Rebellion is in the larger revolution. I think the Regenerative Culture plays a big part! I resonate with what April said about the collaborative focus - and something our group spoke of: really Sharing Our Vision of Change -using actions to broadcast and share with our networks what our vision is; so many rebels can have so many varied perspectives on what our collective Vision of Change looks like. Thanks for having me :)
