eTutoring
eTutoring and Intervention
eTutoring is a form of supplemental learning for students online who have not yet mastered the standards. Every student learns differently, through different modes, and needs a unique curriculum specifically tailored to his or her own learning style. What works for one student may not work for another. What is important is that the teacher determine the curriculum and resources to be available to the students in question. The curriculum and resources must be effective in assisting students in the mastery of the standards. Websites are effective tools for housing supplemental curricular resources. They can easily be created, and resources can be developed and posted onto any of the webpages. Supplemental Resources such as web links, videos, podcasts, powerpoints, eBooks, live streaming just to name a few.
Supplemental resources in the form of study aids can be created for any subject area can be posted onto a website. Some noteworthy and effective study aids can be created in Powerpoint and Keynote. These presentations can be created to allow students to review concepts and skills outlined in the standards. They can also be changed into eBooks by converting them into PDF format. Examples of some study aids include:
eLesson. The eLesson can consist of a Powerpoint presentation, an eBook, a word document, or a video on a topic or standard students need more information about. The eLesson can be posted on a website for the student to download, or sent to the student by email.
eDictionary (flashcards) The eDictionary is a collection of flashcards for key vocabulary words made created in Powerpoint. Each slide in the Powerpoint represents a keyword, the definition, an image/picture, & a recording of the word and the defintion.
Study Guides. Study Guides on a unit of study can be created to review concepts and skills related to the standards for a unit of study. Slides may include kewords, their definitions, explanations of skills, problem solving strategies, images, diagrams, charts, recordings, and practice questions in preparation for the exam. Teachers can use the study guide to create a comprehensive review for the CST exam in any given subject area. This is an effective way for students to brush up their knowledge and skills in preparation for this exam in class or at home.
The Virtual Classroom
The Virtual Classroom is an interesting way to tutor individuals or small groups using a virtual whiteboard online. The whiteboard technology allows a teacher to type or draw on the board. Your students are able to “see” your questions, comments, and responses. If you sign up for the free account, you are able to tutor up to 5 people. When you sign up, you are given an administrative password to login with and it will ask to enter a password that you can then give your students. You specify the time you will meet and you will give your students the password tey will login with. Visit the following link for an example of a tutoring website making use of virtual whiteboard technology. https://sites.google.com/site/tutorgeniusonline/
Skype
Skype now makes it easy for video conferencing and online tutoring to happen. Skype uses video and voice technology to allow individuals with built –in cameras and microphones in their computers to both see and hear the person they are connecting with, provided they have the same technology. Skype is free if both you and the person you are contacting both have Skype accounts. Signing up for an account is also free.
