Data files for diabetes deaths from 2006-2010 are attached below - these are all the Table 5.4 files which contain details of all deaths registered with an endocrinological cause listed as the underlying cause.
About 5,000 - 6,000 people die in England and Wales each year with diabetes listed as a cause on their death certificate.

Data (4)
Excess deaths due to diabetes... - death certificates do not tell the whole story.
“There is significant under-recording of diabetes as an underlying cause of death, because deaths in diabetic people are often coded to the secondary complications associated with diabetes. This effect is less marked at younger ages, hence data are also given for ages 1-44. Even at these ages there is likely to be some under-reporting, which could vary between regions and over time.” (NCHOD)
Data (5) 2009/2010
Life expectancy and mortality
• Diabetes is the fifth most common cause of death in the world.
• More than one in ten (11.6 per cent) deaths among 20 to 79-year-olds in England can be attributed to diabetes. If current trends continue, one in eight (12.2 per cent) deaths among 20 to 79-year-olds will be attributable to the condition by 2010.
• Life expectancy is reduced, on average, by:
– more than 20 years in people with Type 1 diabetes
– up to 10 years in people with Type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes: Mortality rate from the ONS / DH, listed on Data.gov.uk, data published at NCHOD which has several files, the most relevant would seem to be 27C_061NO_09_V1 (attached) - the number of deaths in 2009.
5,271 people died from diabetes in England and Wales in 2009, published in 2010 (in England alone - 4,934) – these can be found in Cells S21 and S22 in that 27C_ file (as above, attached).

Data for “Deaths ONS” column (Office for National Statistics) for 1999-2005 taken from spreadsheets in Mortality Statistics: Cause (Series DH2), 2006-2009 data is from Mortality statistics: Deaths registered in England and Wales (Series DR) and 2010 from Death registrations in England and Wales, selected data tables (specifically “Death registrations by sex and single year of age, 1961 to 2010, England and Wales and UK”). EDIT: They've moved them around again, try http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/publications/all-releases.html?definition=tcm%3A77-27475

Data for the second column “Deaths Hansard” come from Parliamentary response to written question Deaths: Diabetes (2010).
The major problem is that diabetes is responsible for more deaths than this but good stats are difficult to find. Deaths where diabetes was included as a mentioned cause were no longer included after 1999.
“All mentioned causes have been coded routinely since 1993. Annual volumes in the DH2 series for 1997-1999 include analyses of mentioned causes, but they have been omitted in later volumes.”
In 1999 diabetes was listed as both an underlying cause and a mentioned cause, but I don’t think we have any data on this from beyond 1999 that’s easily accessible.

The YHPHO produced a report in 2008 (Diabetes Attributable Deaths) using 2005 data which said that "In England 26,300 deaths between the ages of 20 and 79 years in 2005 can be attributed to diabetes. This equates to 11.6% of all deaths in this age group.”
Note that this just refers to people of a certain age in England only, and from deaths in 2005.
We can then apply a calculation – there are 8,760 hours in the day (365 days x 24 hours = 8,760) so dividing 26,300 by 8,760 gives 3.00.
