Amputations
Number of amputations
Data (1)
"The Diabetes Footcare Activity Profiles have been developed to provide information on the inpatient care of people with diabetes who are admitted to hospital for a range of footcare conditions. They are designed to allow those involved in the provision of this care to appreciate the scale of activity and relate this to similar trusts across England. The data used is from the Hospital Episode Statistics database and covers all episodes of inpatient care between April 2007 to 31st March 2010 (published August 2011) and April 2008 to March 2011 (published January 2012)."
Data (2)
“100 amputations are carried out each week because of diabetes” - data for England
Note: this is NOT the same as 100 people
Data (3)
“Number of Admission Continuous Inpatient Spells with lower limb amputation and diabetes” - data for England
2009/10 5,700
2008/9 5,720
2007/8 5,306

2005/6 5,031
2004/5 4,907
2003/4 4,921
2002/3 4,894
Note: these figures divided by 52 weeks give approximately 100 amputations a week.
Data (4) 2010 data

Note: referring to Type 2 diabetes and major amputations, not applicable to all people with diabetes.
